FIRST IMPRESSIONS
From the two previous slides, I can see that the website is fun, entertaining and engaging.
The colours used throughout demonstrate the target audience of teenagers to adults of
around the age of 25. I like the navigation bar in the top right hand corner, the links are easy
to read, and signify different elements of the website. The logo follows the typical conventions
and is placed in the top left hand corner, so it is easily recognisable. I like the use of the video
at the top of the page, this is useful and will attract people into finding more. This is
positioned next to a poster, showing that the channel is new, saying COMING TO YOU,
MARCH 29, 2013. There is no other text so this does appear eye-catching to the user. I like
the banner underneath this section, with a marquee of the different channels and
programmes that the TV channel offers. The only thing I would consider changing if this was
my website would be the position, this would look better positioned directly underneath with
no space in between the two sections. Underneath this, on the second print screen of the
website, there are two headings “Latest News” and “Music” and I like the way these are
positioned on the website, they tell the user exactly what they need to know. I would fix the
alignment of the images under the Latest News section as this makes the website look
unprofessional, but I like the use of the social media bar at the bottom of the page, showing
where else you can find information about the website. This in turn engages a larger
audience. Again, the alignment of this bar at the bottom is slightly out and this makes the
website look rushed.
VIDEO
From watching the video, it provides me an insight to the channel and who the target
audience is. It is made obvious that the programmes featured are targeted towards a
younger female audience, through the use of colloquialisms and names of the channels.
The speaker in the video talks about two specific programme launches, Ayre You Ready
and Fashionista, one being a reality TV show and the other being a fashion programme.
I like how the speaker addresses the audience in her speech. The video shows the
genre of the website and ethos of the channel they are creating. The video is shot in one
location, with the speaker being the main focus throughout but even the location relates
to the image the channel is trying to achieve, with shoes featured on the right side of the
frame and a clothes rail on the left side. I think the lighting could be improved as in this
video it is rather dull, and this takes away from the ‘light’ which is the new channel. I like
the fact they have used a teenage girl to speak during the video, as this attracts and
engages the intended audience as the viewers are able to relate to her and understand
her language used. The desired effect would not have been reached if for example an
elderly man was delivering the message, and therefore it is important to think about what
you are trying to achieve. The speaker also keeps eye contact with the camera
throughout, again involving the audience and helping to create a relationship between
the channel and viewers from the offset.
SHOWS PAGE
SHOWS PAGE
I believe that the shows page is basic, but it does include a brief overview of what to
expect from the programmes listed. I think that this page appears rushed, as the pictures
are not made to be the same size and this in turn would turn people away from the
website as they would expect a professional look. I think this page looks very boring as
opposed to the homepage, with the white background and what appears a large amount
of text, and when we create our website we will need to create a balance between
images and engaging text. The titles are highlighted in bold but do not necessarily stand
out against the rest of the text, and the page could do with less structure to make it more
appealing to the target audience. Three of the TV shows have photographs next to,
where as it feels as though the students gave up when creating an image for the fourth
TV show, instead using a simple white background with the text “The Date” which does
not seem appealing, as from the others you get a sense of what the programme is going
to involve, where as with this one you have no idea. There is a sentence at the end of
each of the paragraphs about the TV show saying “you can find out more about ___
here” yet this is not eye-catching and will not engage the reader to want to click the link
as it looks like a regular piece of text. If this was me creating this website, I would create
a button or larger, bolder text to show that the link is to a new page containing further
information.
ABOUT
PAGE
ABOUT PAGE
The about page is quite basic, I do like the header which incorporates the logo as I think
this takes away from the large amount of text filling the rest of the page. The students
have decided to put 21TV in bold whenever they mention this on the about page, and
this helps the audience to know that this page is about the channel itself rather than the
people who created it. I like the consistency of the social media bar at the bottom, as I
think this does engage the audience into following the channel on other areas of the
internet. I also think that this is a good idea if the people are just browsing the website,
and do not notice this on another page. What I would change is the large blocks of text
which are on this page, I think this would in turn make the audience turn away as it is not
engaging, and I do not think this is the best way to present this information to the young
teenage girl audience. This page would look more interesting if the girls who created the
website included an image on this page, possibly one each of themselves with the quote
so you know the creators, or a general image which relates to the TV channel and could
fill the large white gap which has been left on this page, showing again the lack of
professionalism. I also noticed that the students have used two different colours of pink
for the text on this page, although this is a small detail, this should be avoided where
possible, again for consistency reasons.
FAQ PAGE
FAQ
I think the frequently asked questions page does include important information,
but I feel like this could be presented in a more engaging way, especially as the
intended target audience is 18-24 year olds. I think the numbers look out of
place on the left hand side as they are large and bold, and do not look very
structured. I don’t understand the use of the purple text for “frequently asked
questions” underneath the FAQ header, as purple is not an on-going colour
through the website, I would say the website is predominately pink white and
black. Again the students have used the social media bar at the bottom,
showing consistency and engaging the target audience who are likely to be
common users of YouTube, twitter and Facebook.
