- 4. Technology Planning Process Develop a Technology Vision What is the role of technology at the College of Charleston? Determine Campus-Wide Goals for Technology How should technology be used at the College of Charleston? What technology standards are we trying to address? Develop Steps Toward Achieving our Goals What processes do we put in place to ensure that we are meeting our technology goals? Create Structured, Meaningful, and Continuing Technology Assessment Are we meeting the technology needs of the campus community?
- 5. Vision Statement We must provide a vision statement in order to explain the broad goals of our Technology Use Plan. Suggested Vision Statement: Technology is increasingly salient in the lives of humans around the world. In concert with its educational commitment to preparing students to be effective members of the global community, The College of Charleston will provide meaningful access to technology, both inside and outside the curricular context.
- 6. Goals and Objectives Our Technology Plan must include clearly defined goals and objectives. Suggested Goals and Objectives: Provide all members of the campus community with technology training opportunities. Provide all members of the campus community with access to emerging technologies. Use technology to effectively enhance student learning. Provide the campus community with well-developed, efficient technology maintenance and support. Research, adopt, and strive to meet nationally-recognized technology standards.
- 7. Needs Assessment Structured assessment tool to provide “situational awareness” of the campus community’s current technology use as well as its needs. We must assess technology use across the full spectrum of the campus community: Students, Faculty, and Staff. Questions to address in our needs assessment include: How is technology currently being used? Are students, faculty, and staff well-trained in the use of technology? Are faculty using technology in a pedagogically meaningful way? What hardware and software is being used by our campus community? What benefits does the campus community perceive as being associated with technology? What negative factors does the campus community perceive as being associated with technology? (continued)

Needs Assessment (continued) A potential needs assessment instrument has been created: Link to Potential Needs Assessment Tool This particular assessment tool was designed to be delivered to faculty each semester. Was developed to build a picture of “milestones” over time. Where are we each semester? What is changing? Additionally, similar needs assessments should be developed for students and staff. Once standards are adopted, assessment should include some measure of the level of achievement of those standards.
- 9. Staff Development Faculty development provided in the form of the Faculty Technology Institute. Faculty are trained to use technology hardware and software with an eye toward improving student learning. Smaller, topic-specific workshops should be offered for all members of the campus community. Some workshops are currently available. More effective needs assessment will help determine what additional workshops are necessary. Self-training tools should be developed and kept up-to-date. There should be easy access to self-paced training tools for the campus community. These tools should provide training on general technology tools and practices as well as those tools and practices that are specific to the College of Charleston. (continued)
- 10. Staff Development (continued) Participation in educational technology-related professional organizations should be strongly encouraged. Participating in these organizations will provide members of the campus community with important resources as well as the opportunity to develop research and presentation material. Professional organizations also foster a strong sense of collaboration and communication. This is important in helping determine “what works” in dealing with established and emerging technologies in the educational environment.
- 11. Evaluation and Research There must be regular, structured evaluation of the College of Charleston’s Technology Plan. Are we meeting our goals? Are we meeting the technology needs of the campus community? What parts of the technology plan are working? What parts are not working? What changes to the technology plan are needed? The Technology Planning Group should use the ongoing Needs Assessment results to help determine the effectiveness of the technology plan. How do we compare to peer institutions? Does our plan have similar goals to those institutions that the college has determined are “peer institutions?” Have peer institutions encountered similar shortcomings in the development and application of a technology use plan? How did they surmount those shortcomings?
