Android is an open-source, Linux-based operating system for mobile devices. It was developed by Android Inc which was acquired by Google in 2005. There are over 400,000 apps available on the Android Market. Key features include the ability to run multiple apps simultaneously, support for graphics and Java applications. Major versions include Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. The open source nature allows high levels of customization. It provides a competitive alternative to other mobile platforms and allows development using Java and Eclipse IDE.
