Editor's Notes

• #2: This presentation will describe how to transfer video footage from a standard definition camera to a computer loaded with Avid Editing software.
• #3: Even though Avid is used by professional editors for major motion pictures and television programming, it doesn’t mean that someone outside the profession can’t use it. Avid provides a professional quality video for use in television commercials as well as instructional videos for the classroom or in a presentation. It doesn’t have to be an intimidating ordeal. The hardest part, on average, is loading the video into the software.
• #4: There is a difference in the IEEE 1394 connector and a USB connection. Notice the diagram. This connection is clearly marked on the computer and is usually found alongside the USB connections. Make sure that the camera is turned off and then plug the cable into the camera and then into the computer. When 1394 cable is connected, turn on the camera and switch to VCR mode from Camera or Record mode.
• #5: The IEEE 1394 Cable is a specialty cable but relatively easy to find. Nearby stores such as Best Buy, Wal-mart, Radio Shack or most electronics stores carry them as well as online outlets. This cable should be used for video transfer due to its capability to transfer a larger amount of data which video is. Notice that the cord resembles a USB cable, only the ends are somewhat different. (on the professional version, talk about the difference in pin numbers such as 4 pin, 6 pin etc)
• #6: Open the Avid software on your computer by clicking the icon. The project screen appears for you to set up your project. Click New Project. Type in your project name. In the Format option box, click the down arrow and select 30i NTSC which is the format for 29 frames per second; the correct transfer rate for standard definition video in the United States. This assures that your footage will be loaded in the correct format now so as to not to encounter issues later. Click OK in this box and then in the Project box.
• #7: This is the Composer screen. This is the main editing screen which will be used for editing your video. First things first. Look at the arrow. Make sure that the 1394 button is selected on the Timeline screen. Next, we will select the project from the project bin. Click it and it opens into what is called the super bin. From here, move up to the menu bar and select tools. This will bring down a menu. On this menu, choose capture. The Capture screen will now appear.
• #8: Next, you’ll set up the Capture tool. This is a diagram of all of the buttons and settings that are used to record your video into the Avid software. Each one must be set correctly to make sure that the process will be completed accurately. Taking the time to perform this task correctly makes the capture process much easier. First, make sure that the capture button is selected. This button switches between Log and Capture.Next, make sure that the video and audio are set to Host-1394 to match your cable input from the camera. Select the Tape name and this box will open. Click where it says new tape and type in the name for your project. When you have done this, Click OK.
• #9: Now you are ready for the last two steps. Your Capture Tool should look like this. Select the Video button and Audio 1 and Audio 2 from the Channel Selection buttons. Make sure the Timecode or TC button is on as well. Now, you’re ready to record. Click the Record button and the video footage should show in the Timeline window as it is captured to your Avid software. Avid used by professionals, but now you, the consumer, can do it too.
