Select an archival topic in which you are interested, preferably focusing on one of
the week's subjects, or an aspect of that unit. The goal of this assignment is to
encourage you to delve more deeply into the literature without having to write a
full-fledged research paper.
Develop an annotated bibliography of 8 to 10 sources on your chosen topic.
Annotated bibliography entries consist of a full citation in some standard form
and text of 100-150 words summarizing and assessing that source in terms of its
quality and relevance to the topic. Attention should be given to the appropriate
audience for this source (novice, professional with experience, administrator). If
your journal articles have abstracts, you can include them. But don't worry if they
do not.
Please begin with an introductory paragraph explaining what you are doing and
the approach you are taking. You do not have to describe your search strategy.
If you do not know how to do an annotated bibliography, there are many sources
on the Internet. I have listed two websites below, but there are many others. I
am not fussy about which form of citation you use (Chicago, APA). Just include
full citations and be consistent.

If you have any questions about your topic or the appropriateness of sources, let
me know. They should not duplicate syllabus readings but can take off from
those footnotes. Sources can be traditional journal articles, monographs, or
websites with substantial relevant information. A combination of type of sources
is optimal – please don’t just do websites and don't use websites unless they
have information that resembles what one might find in a journal article.
This assignment is worth 30% of your grade. Points will be deducted if the
sources chosen are not appropriate for an archival audience at some level, if
there is no coherent theme to the bibliography, if the citations are incomplete, or
if the annotation is not germane and coherent.
