• #26: Microsoft O365, Sharepoint, Azure BGP Routing Outage Description: This large scale Microsoft outage shows Page Load and HTTP Server failures globally. Internet Insights also reports a corresponding outage during this time impacting multiple MS applications. An investigation into the BGP routing layer show the MS ASN stopping and then re-announcing the BGP prefix for these services in Azure. MS later confirmed a configuration error led to the BGP routing instability globally. Layers shown: Page Load, HTTP Server, End-to-End Metrics, Path Visualization. • #27: VeloCloud - Workday Loss Description: This VeloCloud lab example shows loss in Amazon’s Cloudfront network when agents are attempting to connect to www.workday.com.  EA01 and EA02 are connecting to Workday via VeloCloud’s tunneling technology, which drops users off in Equinix data centers for SaaS cross connects.  EA03 and EA04 are accessing the internet directly. • #29: William Hill – Cloud Migration Gone Wrong Description: This example shows a migration from serving the William Hill website from a private data center to AWS. William Hill is an online betting and gambling site, so very user experience sensitive. The sharelink starts on Path Viz when the site is being served from the data center. Shift to Page Load and you’ll see that the average Page Load is 1.37 seconds. Now select Maidenhead, England from the Agents pulldown, then staying on Page Load, move to the timeframe where there’s an obvious spike in the Page Load on the graph to 2.74 seconds—which is 2x and not good for user experience! Why is this happening? Move to the HTTP layer and change the metric to response time and you’ll see a big spike there. But we can dig even deeper. Go to Path Viz and change the metric to latency and you’ll see that this has risen a lot from 8ms to 94ms, that’s almost 12x!! Okay, what is going on? Well, look at the path viz and you’ll see that the site is being served from the distributed Amazon Cloudfront CDN edge network instead of the single data center. Now hover over the CDN node on the right that is serving Maidenhead and you’ll see that it’s located in … Indianapolis, IN?? Okay, so suboptimal. But is that happening everywhere? Go one down to the node that is serving the Dublin Cloud Agent and hover over it, and you’ll see that it’s located in London, England, which is much closer. So, this is a great case of how a move to the cloud can go wrong and impact user experience. But would you know if this is happening? How long would it take to figure it out?
