The focus of these IOM goals are to improve healthcare across the United States and to improve the

National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs), established in 2002 by the Joint Commission, is to help
accredited organizations address specific areas of concern in regard to patient safety ("Catheter–

493. SB 493 is a law, also signed by Governor Brown, that allows girls and women in California just
drop by their neighborhood pharmacy and pick up birth control pills without a prescription from a

areas, healthcare coverage to rural areas did not change as much as expected due to several other

The decision ruled that expansion of Medicaid, a state government, become optional for states
because Congress had "exceeded its constitutional authority by coercing states into participating in

The law is complex and has many facets to it that are difficult to understand. What is apparent is that
the government enacted the ACA to provide all Americans regardless of their economic status access
to affordable health care. According to a lot of people in the United States, while the ACA may
provide an avenue for uninsured Americans to obtain health insurance, there is an underlying agenda
that the government has in doing so. Perhaps those that believe this have good reason to feel this
way because according to heritage.org, the ACA "imposes intru¬sive federal control of the

The American Nurses Association (ANA) has been campaigning for health care reforms that will
guarantee access to quality health care for everyone. Since PPACA was passed, millions of people
now have increased protection against being denied health insurance coverage and losing their
coverage; with improved access to preventive and primary services. ANA identifies the debate of
health care is not over, and remains devoted to educating the nursing public about how the changing

The patient may become sicker and acquire hospital complications. It not only costs the patient more
money, but could in turn cost the hospital as well. That bed could have been used for another patient
in need of care.
Nurses Role as a Leader
Hand in hand with education progression and nurses being full partners, the IOM fully expects that
many more nurses will emerge as leaders. The report proposes that leadership be embedded in
nursing education to prepare nurses for this role. It describes the importance of mentorship in
helping nurses to achieve advancement, leadership and partnership. Along with leadership roles a
nursing residence or preceptorship program would be prudent to better transition nurses all the way

margins, we begin to see the need for a higher capacity healthcare delivery system. This in turn puts
pressure on the healthcare organizations to ensure higher standards of patient care, and compliance
with the reform provisions. However, these are the harsh realities of today's healthcare environment,
a setting in which value does not always equal quality. The use of technology can help to amend
some of this by providing higher capacity care without compromising quality; this can be done with
