Definition
• What is Distance Education?
– Within a context of rapid technological change and
shifting market conditions, the American education
system is challenged with providing increased
educational opportunities without increased budgets.
– Many educational institutions are answering this
challenge by developing distance education programs.
At its most basic level, distance education takes place
when a teacher and student(s) are separated by
physical distance.

• Significant Objectives of Distance Education
– Provide an effective alternative path to wider
opportunities in education
– Provide an efficient and less expensive education
– Provide education facilities to all qualified and
willing persons
– Provide opportunities of academic pursuits to
educated citizens willing to improve their standard of
knowledge
– Provide education facilities to as a life-long activity

Alternative Path
• Provide education facilities to those individuals
who look upon education as a life-long activity:
– There are different categories of potential learners.
• There are some who never been able to enter into any
institution of higher learning.
• Some need additional knowledge in a particular discipline.
• Others need refresher courses to cope with the latest
development in their perfection.
• For all of the above there is need for distance learning or
correspondence education.

Efficiency
• Provide an efficient and less expensive education
• Provision of universal schooling is beyond the means of
our country.
• Increasing population and limited resources is the
predicament of our educational planners.
• It is difficult to divert huge sums of money in a developing
economy to match the required level of expansion for
traditional schooling.
• Distance education is the only practical alternative.

Facilities
Provide education facilities to all qualified and
willing persons:
– The objective of correspondence courses is to
provide education facilities to all qualified and
willing persons who are unable to join regular
university and other courses due to various
reasons.
– There is an incessant search for an alternative
system and that system is distance education

Extended Academic Persuits
• Provide opportunities of academic pursuits to
educated citizens willing to improve their standard
of knowledge:
• There are many learner who cannot afford to join the face-
to-face system of education due to personal and
professional responsibilities.
• Some provisions have are made through distance
education.
• The objective is to provide opportunities to improve the
standard of knowledge and learning through continuing
education while in employment.

Life Long learning
• Provide education facilities to as a life-long activity
– Distance learning system must be well-supported
with instructional materials, and suitable radio
and television programs in different areas of
study.
– Correspondence education or distance learning is
becoming popular and being accepted as an
alternative and economical approach to our
formal education system.

Study Guide Purpose
• To organize lecture notes and text book
material so that you can increase your
comprehension and memory of large amounts
of information.
• Prepare study guides that are visual is even
more effective, as the visual organization
helps you see related concepts and make
meaningful connections with the material,

Visual Literacy
• The ability to interpret, negotiate, and make
meaning from information presented in the
form of an image, extending the meaning
of literacy, which signifies interpretation of a
written or printed text.
