Research Topic Speed Dating!
• Turn to the person next to you.
• You have two minutes EACH to describe your research area to each other. The
person who is listening needs to make notes of the key things that
you say, so it would be just need to be a bullet point list.
• When one of you has explained your research idea, let the other
person have a go at explaining theirs.
• If you are not sure of your exact research question, then that’s fine! Describe your
topic area and say what you ARE NOT going to do
• After both of you have explained, you have two minutes to look at
what the other person has written. Can you identify any key words that you
could potentially use?

Archaeology PG dissertation: library resources and tips

Editor's Notes

  • #3: 90% of all digital information was created in the last two years (Big Data talk) 5% of world’s archives have been digitised More online content is created every two days than in the whole of human history prior to 2003 8,195 tweets per second 90% of articles are never cited, allegedly http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2014/04/23/academic-papers-citation-rates-remler/ http://philbradley.typepad.com/phil_bradleys_weblog/2015/08/40-social-media-statistics.html 1.8 million academic articles published every year Estimated 50 million journal articles in existence in 2010 http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/alpsp/lp/2010/00000023/00000003/art00008?token=004b13046556e586546243142425b206621766b67702c5e4e2663433b393f6a333f2566b8bf 20 books published every hour in the UK in 2014 http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/oct/22/uk-publishes-more-books-per-capita-million-report We have over 300 specialist databases We bought over 1,000 BoT last year There are around 6,900 active languages in the world Search 90 library catalogues via COPAC ? Fake news
  • #5: Identify Keywords The words that you use in your research title may or may not be the keywords used by authors of books, journals, conference papers etc. So you need to think through alternate words so that your search is fruitful. Source Type What kind of information do you want? e.g Overview of a topic? An in depth report? A media view? An official government review? Only academic research? Facts and figures? Experimental results data? Etc When you decide what information you need, this will affect where you are going to search. Limits and Scope Lots of different types of questions you could ask here. How much information do you need? e.g Everything ever written? Just a few key references? Does language matter? Geography location? Your time constraints may also come into play here. What is realistic in your time frame? How up to date does the information need to be? e.g Only up to date stuff? More than 10/20 years old? Refine your question Once you have been through these stages, you will have started to refine your question Stress that this is a cyclical process and it is a cycle you will go through for your intitial research proposal, but an ongoing one that you will keep going through for your research project / dissertatation.
  • #6: If it is easier for them to do it in their own language, then they can do it as long as they can understand each other. Have a timer on https://www.tickcounter.com/timer
  • #7: Quick demo library search. 1. dreamworld AND medieval literature with everything except articles. Ask the question, why do we get no results? In Library search, looking for books, what sort of information would we be looking for? 2. Try dream AND medieval literature. Select a book returned. Point out details tab. How has that book been described? Have different terms been used than we are searching for? Add them to your lit search. 3. Try choosing a particular author and doing LS on them? e.g Chaucer 2. Dreamworld AND medieval literature in everything. Choose an article and demo going through LS 3. a Specific database demo. 1. go to subject guide for English 2. MLA International Bibliography demo (dreamworld OR dreamscape OR dream) AND medieval literature vs. changing to Chaucer. Note the difference in the search result list. 3. Demo exporting details so that can store references. 4. Mention if working from a known source, search for keywords from the title and author’s surname. Save on the scrolling.
  • #8: Subject Guide – demo rather than from slide. Mention other sections that may be relevant depending on chosen topic. Point out topic focus, newspapers & other English lit sources box at the bottom of the page.
  • #9: Working in reverse as unlikely you have a question in mind. I tend to recommend writing down or mind mapping the key themes to do with your thinking. Which are the broadest terms, which the narrower terms?
  • #12: Just highlight difference between using subject guide and LS. Mention when move onto a longer piece of research, will need to consider using resources from subject guide as may have exhausted what was found in LS Also mention other subject guides that may help including EndNote and subject guides
  • #13: With an extended piece of research, need to stay up to date with new material published in you area. All databases have the option to set up a personal account. Go back to MLA International Bibliography to show ebsco account. Also mention share option. Citation searching. Demo in Google Scholar cited by and mention using bibliographies. If time, demo in SCOPUS the references option. Use Chaucer search and limit to articles.
  • #14: Skip over if time is limited. Summary of what will have mentioned in database demo.
  • #16: Kahoot – 4 simple search questions.
  • #18: 4000 words is on the long side, and if do a full dissertation it is 10,000 words, so it’s worth having a system. Doesn’t have to be complicated. In Word, download app to your phone e.g. RefMe or just dump references in a Word document as you go. Demo in Ebsco the cite option.
