Look at the cards on your
            desk.
 In pairs discuss match the
key words to the definitions.
The space inside the shape
Area Remember: The grass inside a field
The length around the outside of a shape
Perimeter Remember: The fence around the field
A four sided shape, two sets of parallel sides, two pairs of
Rectangle sides that are the same length, all angles are 90˚

A four sided shape, all sides are the same length,
Square all angles are 90˚, two pairs of parallel sides
A shape with three sides, all the sides are straight
Triangle
This shows a measurement of area
cm²
A shape with only straight sides
Polygon
Side by side and having the same distance
Parallel continuously between them

Editor's Notes

  • #11: Give each student a rectangle with measurements on the side. Get them to fold along the diagonal and discuss how we made a rectangle into a triangle. Discuss how this works and see if we can come up with a rule. Write it on the white boards. Then see if we can write it as a algebraic formula.
