Creative	Media	Program	Tanzania
Summary

Art	in	Tanzania’s	Media	Department	focuses	on	using	digital	media	outlets	such	as	social
media,	web	pages,	and	blogs. We	use	the	media	to	give	visibility	to	our	programs,
marketing,	Children	Agenda	(partnered	with	UNICEF),	music,	arts,	and	the	other	areas
we	are	focused	upon.

Our	community-based	programs	are	to
empower	the	local	communities	and	individual
people.	Our	interns	experience	being	immersed
in	the	daily	life	of	Tanzania	while	also	having
the	opportunity	to	witness	the	growth	of	the
fastest	growing	economy	in	Africa.

Art	in	Tanzania	is	established	within	Tanzania’s
art	sector. For	over	15	years,	and	with	over	18
movies	produced,	Art	in	Tanzania	has
supported	local	artists	and	art	programs
develop. Areas	of	focus	include	African	Music
and	Dance,	Film,	and	Design. We	offer	an
immersion	experience	for	students	in	both
developing	culture	and	art. Our	flagship	music
group	Sanaa	Sana	has	traveled	overseas	to
perform	on	several	occasions. We	are	looking	for	traditionally-trained	artists	to	help
enhance	our	programs	by	collaborating,	mentoring,	and	teaching	our	self-taught	art
incubator.

We	document	and	raise	awareness	for	our	efforts	by	incorporating	arts	and	media.	We

Environmental	Sustainability	Tanzania

Summary
Art	in	Tanzania	is	introducing	and	implementing	environmentally	friendly	solutions	for
the	Tanzanian	communities	as	use	of	dry	toilets,	composting	and	household	water
reuse.	We	also	focus	on	eco	construction	and	planting	bamboo	as	eco-friendly	solution
for	construction	material.	We	also	emphasize	the	sustainable	tourism	operations.

Details
Tanzanian	communities	are	lacking
economical	strength	to	implement
environmentally	friendly	solutions	in
their	households.	Presently	less	than
50%	of	the	households	have	a	toilet.
Interns	are	developing	sustainable
and	affordable	solutions	including	a
dry	toilet	for	households	and	schools.

Other	green	work	includes	developing	composts,	sustainable	sources	for	cooking	heat,
development	of	tree	and	bamboo	nurseries	as	well	as	neighborhood	education	and
advocacy. A	local	source	of	funding	and	sustainability	for	Art	in	Tanzania	are	wildlife
safari	and	other	tourism	operations.	We	are	developing	a	NGO	business	model	to
streamline	revenue	back	into	communities.

We	are	developing	more	opportunities	to	expand	our	field	of	international	volunteering
and	internships	to	empower	our
work	in	Tanzania. Though	we
believe	that	most	of	the	value	in	our
internships	come	from	the	hands	on
experience	and	opportunities,	we
offer	both	paid	and	non-paid
internships. As	we	are	an	NGO,	our
paid	internships	are	in	accordance
with	the	Tanzanian	minimum	salary.
However,	to	offset	the	low	minimum
wage	of	a	developing	country,	we
use	what	resources	we	have	to	offer
low	housing	expenses.	Interns	are	working	in	a	team	of	international	and	Tanzanian
multi	professional	intern	teams.	We	encourage	innovation	in	the	program	approach.

Ms.	Marjut	Valtanen	is	tutoring	this	program.

The	working	hours	are	6-8	hours	per	day	from	Monday	to	Friday.	This	is	ongoing
program	and	we	can	adjust	the	starting	dates.

Women	Initiatives	Tanzania
Summary
Art	in	Tanzania	supports	and	develops	village	women	initiatives.	The	main	inputs	are
vocational	training	in	English,	IT,	entrepreneurship,	women	rights	and	related	subjects.
We	are	also	developing	medical	services	and	health	information	sessions.

Details

Tanzania	has	a	large	group	of	young
mothers	in	the	villages	that	have	little	or	no
education	and	are	without	financial
support. Additionally,	areas	are	often
heavily	populated,	which	complicates	the
strive	of	livelihood	and	provision	for	these
Mother’s	children. Most	of	these	women
lack	the	opportunity	to	reach	education	or
means	to	fund	and	develop	small
businesses. Additionally,	many	of	these
women	are	under-empowered	or	unaware
of	their	basic	human	rights,	thus	making
young	mothers	vulnerable	for	abuse.

Art	in	Tanzania	is	focusing	to	deliver	skills
for	women	to	start	their	own	small
businesses	and	to	create	markets	to	their	products.	At	the	same	time	we	educate
women	rights	and	related	subjects	so	that	women	will	learn	their	rights	in	problem
situations.	We	focus	to	be	both	innovative	and	effective.

We	are	looking	for	to	hire	multi	professional	students	and	interns	to	support	our	work.
We	tailor	the	posts	according	the	participants	focus	and	interests	and	skills.	We	look	for
to	be	innovative.	Interns	bring	their	ideas	that	we	look	for	to	implement	to	strengthen
the	fieldwork.	We	encourage	innovation	and	a	self-led	creativity	in	the	professional
program	approach.

Work	with	women	is	under-funded	but	Art	in	Tanzania	has	multi	professional	interns
and	volunteers.	We	use	teamwork	to	create	opportunities.	One	can	teach	how	to	start
horticulture	and	one	can	look	for	the	markets.	The	base	effort	is	to	increase	the	small
business	skills	through	educational	approach	and	to	increase	awareness. We	also	focus
to	give	visibility	of	women	issues	through	social	media	for	the	Tanzanian	general
population.

Mrs.	Sonja	Lauren	and	Mr.	Michael	Sungu	tutor	this	program.
