- 11. AI Advanced Applications • In 1997, IBM Deep Blue defeats chess champion Garry Kasparov • Deep Blue uses computational “brute force” method, evaluating 20 possible opening moves on 8x8 grid.
- 12. AI Advanced Applications • In 2011, IBM Watson, a natural language question answering computer, competes on quiz show Jeopardy! and defeat two former champions, winning $1m prize.

AI Advanced Applications • In 2016, Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo defeats Go champion Lee Sedol which AI researcher thought was not possible to achieve in 20 years. • Go has 361 possible opening moves on its 19x19 grid. It is so large that no AI can currently explore every possibility using previous IBM Deep Blue’s “brute force” method in chess. • DeepMind works on combination of different elements to mimic human decision-making. • The algorithm was developed in phases including supervised learning, reinforcement learning, “intuition”, value network learning & algorithm combining all these, called “Monte Carlo tree search” • DeepMind analyse data for patterns. It has no idea it’s playing Go!
