Behaviourism is an approach in psychology that views human behaviour as determined by environmental stimuli and conditioning processes. Behaviourists believe that behaviour can be explained without reference to internal mental states. They study learning through classical and operant conditioning, using controlled experiments with animals and humans. While behaviourism introduced scientific methods to psychology, it is criticised for ignoring cognitive influences on behaviour and oversimplifying human learning processes. Nonetheless, behavioural techniques have proven effective in modifying problem behaviours.
