Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson dubbed “The King of Pop” was born August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana
Member of the famous group “the Jackson Five”, formed by his father Joseph Jackson
which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970
Michael launched his career at age 13 and had his first hit with the single “Ben” from the
album “Ben”
Michael collaborated with many famous artist’s over the years such as Paul McCartney
and broke numerous records including the Guinness World Record for the longest Span of
U.S. top 40 Singles from 1971- 2011
Suffered a Cardiac arrest on June 25, 2009 at his home in Los Angeles at Age 50
News of Michael’s death resulted in an outpouring of public grief and sympathy.
Memorials to Jackson were erected around the world
His children accepted a Posthumous Lifetime Achievement award for their father at the
Grammys.

Britney Spears
Born March 27, 1970
During her first decade in the music industry she became a
prominent figure in mainstream popular music and popular
culture
Her albums “Baby One More Time” and “Oops I Did It Again”
became the best selling albums by a teenage solo artist
Spears was established as a pop icon and credited with
influencing the revival of teen pop during the late 90’s
Her work has seen her earn various awards and accolades
including nine Billboard Music Awards
Throughout her career spears has drawn inspiration from
artists such as Madonna and Janet Jackson in forms of vocals,
chorography and stage presence.

Many of us have a love hate relationship with Rock music. I never actually
realised that some of the songs I listen to from the 60s and 70s were in fact
classified as Rock. I have now come to the understanding that there is a huge
array of Rock genres, 81 different types to be precise.
Something most people may not realise is that the exact period when rock
music first started is not known. There were rock and roll elements in country
western songs as far back as the 20s and 30s. But it was in full swing by the
time the 1950's came around. (RockMusic.mu 2007)
According to the All Music Guide, "In its purest form, Rock & Roll has three
chords, a strong, insistent back beat, and a catchy melody. Early rock & roll
drew from a variety of sources, primarily blues, R&B, and country, but also
gospel, traditional pop, jazz and folk. All of these influences combined in a
simple, blues-based song structure that was fast, danceable, and catchy."

ELVIS PRESLEY
Short Biography of Elvis Presley
Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8 1935 Elvis Aaron Presley
was the only child of Vernon and Gladys. Known to many as the
King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley was an international sensation.
He began his singing career with Sun Records in Memphis. At age
20 he had a "sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse
musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial
barriers of the time". (Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. 2013)
He was the star of 33 successful films, was frequent on television
shows, he had many record-breaking live concert tours. He has sold
over one billion records worldwide, which is more than any other
artist in history. He was fortunate enough to receive many awards
and accolades including 14 Grammy nominations.
At age 42 Elvis Presley passed away at his home in Memphis. He
left behind a legacy and a record that many artists aspire to achieve.
He is often regarded as being one of the most important figures of

RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS
Short Biography of Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Commonly classified as a funk rock band the Red Hot Chili
Peppers formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983. They have
been one of the most influential rock groups throughout the years
and are still pushing the music boundaries. The band has seen
different members come and go throughout their illustrious 30 year
career in which they have sold over 80 million records worldwide,
and have won seven Grammy Awards.
'Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem' was
the original band name that was used when they initially formed for
a one-off support act for a friend's band. They renamed themselves
Red Hot Chili Peppers and played at a handful of clubs in Los
Angeles in 1983 before being signed to EMI Records. (Last.fm Ltd,
2013)
The band has seen over 14 members in it's long career. There
have however been two members of the band who have stuck it
out. They are the bands founder Anthony Kiedis and his long time
friend Flea. It wasn't until the early 90's that the band reached
international success and broke into the mainstream music
industry.

“What a Wonderful World” – Louis Armstrong
Then and now
Born from Blues, Folk, March and Ragtime, Jazz music rose
from New Orleans in the early 1900’s and has continued to
evolve ever since. Originating when American and English
classical music integrated with African songs from those
forced into slavery. It is impossible to pinpoint a specific
definition of the music itself because it is full of many
flavours.

How do we define Jazz – or do we?
jazz (jz)n.1. Music. a. A style of music, native to America, characterized by a strong but flexible rhythmic
understructure with solo and ensemble improvisations on basic tunes and chord patterns and, more
recently, a highly sophisticated harmonic idiom. b. Big band dance music.

It is believed that Jazz was created from African-American musicians taking their cultural music and
sound and incorporating it with an English-ness. From back in the cotton-field days down in South
America, when the workers would sing out loud their Mamas’ songs, came the blues which with the
English interaction came Jazz. Back then was a time “that cultivated vigorous rhythms that made your
body move and deeply felt melody that made your heart pour out.”
One significant difference between Jazz and other genres is the predominance of ‘swing’ – the rhythmic
groove that the musicians create when they play. The way in which the notes are played and the
musicians interact their instruments with each other results in what is known as syncopation and in turn
results in a “visceral response”. In other words, ‘swing’ is music that inspires us to dance. The
syncopated rhythm became ragtime, then Dixieland, Big Band and finally evolved into what we would
call modern jazz.
But there is no one simple form of this genre as it connects to so many varying styles. With
modernisation and the influence of cultures worldwide, Jazz has changed drastically to Latin, rhythm,
be-bop, fusion, acid-jazz, funk and many more.

There are so many notable musicians who have paved the way in Jazz. Without a doubt it would be too hard to pin
any one down, however I have given examples here of those I believe are worthy of the Jazz crown.
It helps to appreciate that the music is performed either by voice; piano; bass/double bass; brass instrument/s;
drums and percussion – using the voice or instruments independently, in harmony or as a band. Often the piano
chords sound off-beat tied with an underlying melody connecting it together. In addition there will often be a
distinctive walking bass line holding it’s own underneath.
Louis “Pops” “Satchmo” Armstrong (1901-1971) is one of the most influential musicians of all time and
predominantly in the Jazz scene. From New Orleans, he instigated solo trumpet playing and sang with a distinctive
gravelly voice, inspiring many other famous musicians.
Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) was a master of this music with “complex and dissonant harmonies”. He was unique
in his appearance and favoured dark glasses, hats and suits naming him “hip”. Had a great influence on Miles Davis.
Dizzy Gillespie (1917-1993) influenced Miles Davis with his trumpet playing and having spent time in Cuba, brought
that influence to his music.
Miles Davis (1926-1991): Like Louis Armstrong, Davis began at a young age playing the cornet and then the
trumpet. Moving to New York in 1944 he had opportunities to grow and learn playing with Charlie Parker, John
Coltrane and under the influence of Gil Evans. From ‘cool jazz’ to ‘hard bop’, Davis then made his best album “Kind
of Blue” which is one of the best selling albums of all time.
