Web authoring: protocols, design convent ions and software
Introduction
In this report I will discuss web authoring and everything else it involves like: protocols, design
conventions and software. I will be explaining everything about what these are.
Protocols
Protocols are just another word for rules. When discussing web authoring protocols we are talking
about the rules which govern the exchange of data and information over the internet. There are
several; protocols we need to be familiar with and understand. Uniform Resource locater (URL) this
is the web address for the website for example www.google.com this protocol will lead you to the
website. Domain name which is the name of a website, these seem to be more memorable so
people type this into the website like “Facebook”. Also the top level domain name which is the last
section of the URL these are ‘UK’, ‘JP’ and organisation codes are ‘GOV’ and so on. Domain name
registration this is where users buy domain name for example I brought “Akkit” with the top level
domain name which is “.co.uk”. These are sold and managed buy the top name registrators. Then
their internet service providers (ISPs) this is the company that provides you with access to the
internet like BT, Virgin…Hosting, companies will let you host your website on their servers, they
store your website files on their service which is accessible to others from the internet usually this is
a monthly or yearly fee for doing this. Lastly it’s the web page naming conventions, websites are
made of lots of pages all using the same URL. It will be important for the web page to have a suitable
name that reflects on the content for that page e.g. Home page= www.example.com/index.htm .
Design Conventions
Rule of third is one of the design conventions and one of the most important
design principles. That is applies to layouts and composition of image and
websites. Images and websites can be divided into thirds from three vertical
and horizontal lines. Whenever those lines cross it’s called “point of focus” the
eye is naturally drawn into those positions. Websites that uses the rule of third
is universally seen as visually appealing and keeps the design of the page tidy and neat. There are
three main colour schemes that websites can be designed with, these colours are very important
that you pick the right one because it has to be right with your tone and the feel of the website.
Colour schemes usually reflect the nature of the website. The three main colours ill be explaining to
you are:
Monochromatic, also means one colour. This means if a website is
monochromatic it can only use one colour but it can also use different types of
shades and tints.
The second colour scheme is an analogous colour
scheme which uses the similar types of colours
analogous are locatred to each other on the colour wheel.
The third colour scheme is the complimentary colours which are opppisite,
but visually work very well together, they are always found opppisite each
other on the colour wheel.
Font size
Font are very important espcially for your website visually and usability.
Font are actully divided into two catogories: serif and san serif which are
two diffirent types of letters but hardly any diffirent from each other.
San serif means the letters are more clear and in our modern life more
easier to reas because we go by san serif however serif is were theirs
little flicks at the end of each letter which may be a l ittle change but a
big diffirence if you compare them. Font size is ver important for
designing a website along with colour. Titles and sub heading should have a slightly bigger font size
then the text below to show importance and to break the page and content up so its more easier to
see and read. Fonts shoulw be easily coloured so they can easily be read for example if I make the
background black and the text white it will be easy to read. Text on websites can sometimes be
grouped together poorly making it difficult for the person whos looking at it to read let alone use it.
Paragraphs are used in websites and writing to make up long bits of text to tindy their writing and to
make it more proffesional. Each paragraph should have its on focus as in a paragraph should welcom
you to a paragraph or a paragraph intropducing a website and another explaining what its about.
Backgrounds on websites are generally either single colours a pattern or images.single colours
should be right for your colour scheme only for consistance, and should make it easier to read the
writing on your website. Patterns can be used however cannot distract the foreground and content
for your website. Images can be used but its quite difficult also if you get a images that’s too large it
may cause error to your website to load slower.
