First Pitch-
Zombies
What I learnt from Researching this
Sub-genre
• Use of a lot of foley sound to create screams, noises etc.
• Mise en scene plays a huge roll for zombie movies due to the common theme
of violence.
• Lots of blood, guts and gore used during action shots.
• Storyline usually involves a mass take over on a city by zombies (apocalypse)
which eventually spreads. Movie shows the journey of a group of survivors.d
• There is never usually one key villain, main characters are usually focuses on
the survivors.
• Zombie’s can be seen as comedy and represented as a tragic villain.
• Zombies often portrayed as quite static, very poor mobility.
Conventions Of Our
Sub-genre
Plot
• Back in the day, zombies we’re portrayed as the
undead being reborn and animated through magic
• However now as blockbuster movies have
influenced viewers perspective, they have adapted
the “zombie apocalypse” concept where a civilised
world is brought to low due to a global zombie
infestation.
Characters
• Zombies are most often seen as the villain.
• Zombies often portrayed as a group as oppose to
one certain character.
• Characters in the film are usually the survivors
involving a leader of some sort as well as other
members of the group.
Setting
• Usually set in an abandoned city/town.
• A lot of scenes involving abandoned houses, outdoor camping
and abandoned streets.
• Although it depends on the plot, everywhere they go is usually
very quite and abandoned, or a hotspot of zombie territory.
• Usually a lot of blood stains around the abandoned streets,
walls, infrastructure.
• Destroyed cars, windows, institutions to show areas where the
zombies are covered.
Camera Work/Editing
• A lot of close shots used when a zombie fight scene to
emphasise the action
• A lot of cut transitions used during fight scenes as well.
Most of the time they don’t actually show the action being
followed through, they would only show the movement
followed by a cut transition into blood splattering.
• Usually when there zombies come to sight unexpectedly,
they tend to use very wide shot as zombies travel in large
groups and want to emphasise danger.
Sound
• Majority of the sound effects used are foley for the fight/action
scenes.
• A lot of screaming and destruction noise to connote terror.
• Flesh pounding and squishing noise used when zombies attack
humans.
• During destruction periods usually use the sound of female voices
screaming, children crying, car alarms going off etc.
• Sound use for zombies usually involve a lot of slow, deep murmur
with sounds of foot steps or body parts being dragging along.
Plot/Storyline
• Group of teenage boys driving home from camping in a rural area.
• Shots of them driving back with music on, car full of camping gear.
• As they start to enter their town and out of the woods they hit a speed bump where
his mate accidentally turns the car music down.
• They suddenly realise the sound of complete silence which then they realise how
empty and deserted the streets look.
• The driver start to accelerate home with the look of fear on his face.
• The boys run into the house, noticing damaged goods and belongings, rushing
around, screaming out “mum” “dad”.
• He laters open the door to the basement where his family is half eaten. Staring at the
bodies his mate notices the T.V where a journalist is broadcasting a zombie
apocalypse.
Will I reinforce or challenge
conventions, Why?
• To create a zombie horror, the best choice is to
reinforce conventions and stereotypes because if i was
to challenge them, they would be seen as a tragic villain
and the sub-genre would turn into a comedy.
• In regards to appearance and mise en scene, viewers
would not recognise the sub-genre as zombies as they
have never been portrayed in a different way.
• No one has every challenged the stereotypes as it
wouldn’t fit in properly or look right.
Creating Enigma
• Because the boys are left alone in the abandoned
city, the question is how will they survive.
• Towards the end, Once the “mate” realises whats
actually happened due to the news broadcast, it will
end with the title, slowly zooming in.
• The question is, how will they survive, what will
happen next, are there any other survivors etc.
Type Of OTS
• Will be using Linear OTS as the key objective for
this OTS is to set give the viewers a sneak peak of
the film.
• Also helps set the film up and creates an early
enigma before watching it.
• Suits the type of OTS we want to do.
• Acts as a bit of trailer to help entiese the audience.
Character Types/ Social Groups
• Start of with a group of teenage boys, bunch of lads
coming back from a weekend away.
• Zombies will be seen as the villain
