TYPES OF TOURISTS Different types of tourists will want to visit different types of destinations!
Different Types of Tourists: Remember – different types of tourists will have different wants, needs and interests and destinations that appeal to one type of tourist may not appeal to another. Families Young People Senior Citizens Couples Those with specific needs (e.g. medical / religious etc.) Those with specific interests (e.g. sports, leisure, history, local food, bird watching etc.) Business Travellers What would the needs of these different groups of tourists be? How would they differ from each other? What features may hold different appeal to the different types of tourists?
Mr and Mrs Blake and their sons Archie (9) and Henry (11) have chosen to go to Portual to Albufeira in the Algarve. Mr and Mrs Blake enjoy sunbathing and the boys love watersports. The beach is safe and there are lots of place to eat selling English food. It is also a short flight from the UK because none of them like flying. There is also a good choice of 3* and 4* rated apartments with air conditioning, microwaves and TVs. Straightforward Needs: Source: Edexcel Teacher’s Guide – Edexcel Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Travel and Tourism Read the above pen portrait – jot down the straight forward needs of these tourists identified in the Pen Portrait
The Straightforward Needs identified are: Sunny Climate Safe Beaches Short Flight Time Availability of English Food High standards / range of accommodation.
Now read the following more detailed pen portrait for the same family – this time jot down the complex needs that can be identified from what is described in the Pen Portrait. What will the destination need to offer in order to provide for the needs recognised in this pen portrait?
Mr and Mrs Blake and their sons Archie (9) and Henry (11) have chosen to go to Portual to Vilamoura in the Algarve. Mrs Blake is a keen golfer and there is a wide range of challenging golf courses in the area, she also loves shopping. Mr Balke and the boys love big game fishing and there are lots of trips out of the harbour. None of them enjoy sitting on a beach and so they’ve hired a car and plan to drive inland to visit some of the cultural villages like Silves. Vilamoura has a number of 5* hotels with spa clubs, designer shops and an abundance of restaurants offering international and local cuisine. The hotels also offer baby sitting facilities and children’s clubs so the Blakes can spend an afternoon playing golf together whilst the children are being looked after and they could choose to dine out alone. Complex Needs: Source: Edexcel Teacher’s Guide – Edexcel Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Travel and Tourism
The Complex Needs identified are: variety of activities – golf courses and fishing top class hotels with spa facilities hotel facilities to look after the children Local culture and attractions nearby Inland scenery International Restaurants Designer Shops
Suggest some straightforward needs for the following tourists travelling for leisure or business: Mr and Mrs Pilkington, in their mid-twenties, married couple. Travel for leisure Mr DaPlacido aged 50, single. Travels for business. Mr Howe and Miss Johnson, aged mid-thirties, Emma (11) and Guy (14), Mrs Johnson (74). Family group of parents, children and grandmother. Travel for leisure. Source: Edexcel Teacher’s Guide – Edexcel Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Travel and Tourism
Assignment 2 Pen Portrait (Complex Needs) Christian and Emily have 3 children. Oliver is 10 months old, Edward is 4 and Katharine is 14 years old. Emily is a teacher and is restricted to school holidays and the family are planning a 2 week summer break. As a family they already have an expensive holiday to the USA booked for Christmas and therefore this time would prefer to find cheap accommodation which is suitable for families. This is the first time Oliver and Edward have flown, Edward is nervous about flying and so Christian and Emily are hoping to keep the travelling time fairly short. To avoid extra expense, the family do not wish to hire a care and therefore require good public transport. The family are interested in history and culture, they are keen to sample as much of the local culture as possible and the parents would ideally like the children to be able to experience a traditional event of activity in a destination and would like to take trips around the area. The family are keen walkers and Christian is keen to try out some form of water sports.
