Assignment 6: Trailer Exhibition
Research
Tayla Humphris
What’s the purpose of trailers?
The purpose of a trailer is to entice the audiences to go and
watch the film when it is released to gross in profit. Most trailers
range from 2-3 minutes this is the required amount of time to
tantalise the audiences and encourage them to go watch the film
as they leave several enigmas.
How do audiences watch trailers?
There is multiple platforms that audiences can watch trailers on:
• Internet e.g. YouTube and Social Networks
• Television Adverts
• On-the-go e.g. mobile and tablets
• Cinema
Audiences engage with trailers through word of mouth or by
sharing links and embedding trailers via social networking.
Where do audiences go and what type
of platforms do audiences use to
watch trailers?
Audiences will more often then not be introduced to new trailers
whilst at the cinema. Other than that, it will be online via
YouTube or social networks such as Facebook.
What is the relationship between
exhibition platforms for trailers and
audiences
If children were to be exposed to trailers it would be before
watershed and at the cinema they would have a rating of PG
and/or U.
For teenagers and above would be shown trailers often after
Watershed which is generally 9pm and at the cinema of having a
rating of 12A, 15 and 18.
For older generations trailers are accessed often through being
advertised and promoted on social networking.
How do institutions encourage
audiences to ‘investigate’ a film’s
details?
• By making a website of the film that they are able to promote
through social networking it allows audiences to find out
more information and be involved in quizzes and competitions
Explain the role of social media for
trailers?
• The social media is free and can reach a mass audience this
way.
• The social media is good for audience to audience-‘word of
mouth’
• Rotten Tomatoes allows audiences to read ratings and reviews
on the film before they go to watch it to see whether it would
be worth seeing.
• You can also sponsor advertisements so that everyone will be
able to notice it on their news feed e.g. Facebook
Imagine trailers could not be exhibited
via social media, what impact would
this have on audiences and
institutions?
It would have a massive impact on the sales on the audience
going to see the film ,because a lot of people rely on social
media to find out about new upcoming trailers.
The industry would struggle to reach a global audience.
How has the exhibition of trailers
changed over time?
Over time, technology has evolved from limited accesses
through to just TV and Internet alone and the as social media has
been introduced it has created a multi platform for audiences to
watch trailers on.
How are trailers rated and regulated?
What institution is responsible for
rating trailers?
How does the rating of film trailers
affect a range of audiences?
Film ratings can allow or restrict ages from watching the film
depending on its content. The BBFC are in charge of giving this
individual rating and each film must meet certain requirements
to be classified its rating. A U rated film allows a universal
audience of all ages. Compared to an 18 rated film which no one
below the age of 18 is permitted to be allowed to watch the film.
Identify or explain any other issues you
think are important about exhibition
of film trailers
• Piracy
• Trailers may be leaked on to the internet so that other
countries are no longer restricted to see it
