Assignment 8:
Film Poster Research
Judy Ibelgauptiene
Thriller Posters
In the thriller genre four of the posters focus on the main characters head/face
The character also seems to be looking right at you as if you know something they
don’t.
Comedy Posters
In the comedy genre the whole body of the character is shown
The characters are seen busy doing something.
Drama Posters
In the drama genre a hint of the story is given through the image.
For instance Rush is to do with racing this is shown through their costumes and the sky.
The Perks Of Being a Wallflower shows three kids leaning on a green wall, and two seem to
be closer then the other.
Horror Posters
In the horror genre the posters portray some sort of pain.
For instance in The Conjuring there is a rope hanging off a tree.
In the Red State she has a gun.
What are the different types of film posters?
- Teaser Posters, these are early promotional posters for the
film. They usually don’t reveal much information.
- Character Posters, these usually have the same information
on them they just focus of one character to try and sell the
film to the audience of that actor.
- Main poster, this poster usually has all the important
information about the film such as release date, character
names, social networking etc.
Where do film posters get shown and
why?
Film posters are usually in a varies of places:
• Cinemas
• On public transport, such as the side of a bus
• Billboards
• Street walls
These posters are placed in these areas because the
audience can access them at any time.
They are also quite eye catching as they are big, this makes
them easy to see and be taken notice of.
What is the typical size for posters?
• The standard poster size is called one sheet. It is 27 inches by 41 inches
(portrait format).
• Bus stop or subway posters are 40 inches by 60 inches (portrait format).
• For billboards, Twenty four sheet, 246 inches by 108 inches is used.
How are posters appealing/attractive to the audience?
The posters are seen as appealing to the audience by leaving them with the enigma
of who is the character, what happened to them and what's the story. This is
created through the image used and the MES. It is also created by the title and its
font, and any slogans used.
Does the appeal/attraction differ than that of the
poster?
The attraction of the poster is aimed at a wider audience then that of the trailer.
This is because anyone can see the poster as it is advertised everywhere.
This means the poster must be aimed at everyone to gain a wider audience.
What are the conventions?
Main Image
The main image on the poster is usually the main character or main
characters, this is so the audience knows who the character is. It is also for
the audience to see what actor/s are in the film.
Actor Names
The main actors names are also seen on the
poster, this is to pay tribute to the actor and to
also attract the actors fans.
Titles/Credits
Credits are usually placed at the bottom of the poster to give credit to some
of the important people.
People like the director sometimes even have their own space for credit.
Release Date
The release date is usually at the bottom of the poster. If the poster is a
teaser poster it usually says ‘coming soon’ whereas the main poster says the
actual date.
Release dates are used to inform the audience upon the release date of the
film.
Tagline
Some posters have taglines to create more of an
enigma to the audience. They usually stand out and are
easy to notice.
What is the difference of conventions
between different subgenres?
Romance Drama
- Main character falls in love
- Problems prohibiting the relationship
Action Drama
- Car chase scene
- Someone usually dies
What are the similarities of
conventions in similar subgenres?
Action Thriller
- Someone usually dies
- Mysterious man
Crime Thriller
- Someone usually dies
- Mysterious man
What are the 3 most prioritised
features?
The three most prioritised features on the film posters are:
• Main actor/s
• Name of film
• Main actors name
This is because these are the most important features of the film, as the
audience must know the name of the film. The main character’s face on the
poster is used to draw fans of that actor into watching the film. It is also so the
audience can see what the main character looks like and get a feel for the
genre through MES.
Summarise how your film posters
reinforce conventions.
My film posters reinforce their
conventions/stereotypes through MES. By the
characters costume and makeup this gives the
audience a sense of what genre the film is without
seeing it.
The audience is also hinted what genre the film is
by the style of font used.
We know this film
is sported related
due to the characters
costumes.
How some film posters challenge the
conventions of film posters
This poster does things differently to other posters as the
main character is not the main focus. The main character
is shown by a shadow but this isn’t the main focus of the
poster.
