Assure Method Lesson Plan
I. Analyze learners: My class consists of twenty 4th grade students – 11 girls and 9 boys.
There are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish, 2 African Americans, and 13 Christians. Also, each child will
learn differently because all children have different learning styles. This will require diverse
instruction that addresses each learning style in order for each student to learn the material.
II. State objectives: My students will state and describe the traditions of the holidays they
learn about in class through web quests, short films, maps, books, and hands-on activities
(such as constructing traditional holiday crafts and creating a collage of how various cultures
celebrate holidays) by the end of the week with 90 percent accuracy.
III. Select methods, media, and materials: To incorporate different learning styles I will use the
following methods, media, and materials:
• Web quests: Students will complete “Holidays Around the World”
• Short films: Students will watch a few films on Christmas, Hanukkah, July 4th
, Kwanzaa,
and Eid-al-Fitr to learn some of the different events that take place during each holiday.
• Maps: I will present a map using the smartboard to show what countries celebrate the
same holidays.
• Books: I will introduce the unit with the book: Children Just Like Me: Celebrations! by
Anabel and Barnabs Kindersley. Also, students will use the textbook in addition to
library books about various holidays and cultures to research similarities and differences
of holiday traditions around the world.
• Glogster: Students will use this online poster to create collages of how different cultures
celebrate a specific holiday.
IV. Utilize media and materials: I will preview the web quest and films that will be used in class.
All technology will be tested before class to make sure it works properly (this includes the
Smartboard and computers). Also, I will look for what sections in the library have useful
information about various holiday traditions, so the students can look for books
independently as needed. I will reserve the computer lab for the students to search for
pictures for their collages and check to see if the color printer is working. In addition, I will
have other available pictures in the form of magazines and newspaper articles for the
students to use.
V. Require learner participation: As an introduction, I will ask students to share some of their
family holiday traditions with the class. Then, I will read sections of the book Children Just
Like Me: Celebrations! by Anabel and Barnabas Kindersley and allow the children to see
some of the pictures of different cultural traditions. I will display a world map on the smart
board and have the students assist me in finding the regions where the holiday traditions
discussed are located. I will then use the smartboard to show short films about various
holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah, July 4th
, Kwanzaa, and Eid-al-Fitr. I will instruct the
students to create a collage incorporating at least three holidays and three countries using
the resources I have provided for them in the manner of websites, videos, books, and
magazines. Lastly, I will divide the students into groups and instruct them to create a
presentation about different holidays using the information from class resources. When the
group has gathered the information chosen to present, the students of that group will
develop a PowerPoint presentation with information about the holiday’s history, different
traditions, songs, festivities, and foods. The groups will give a short presentation of their
PowerPoints to the class.
VI. Evaluate and revise: To evaluate my students I will have them work in groups to create a
presentation about the similarities and differences of holiday traditions throughout the
world. Content of the presentations will include
• the reason the holiday is celebrated
• comparing and contrasting how different countries celebrate the same holiday
• 2 traditional holiday songs of 3 different countries
• the major festivity that takes place in 3 different countries
• the foods eaten during the holiday in 3 different countries
I will also check for achievement by walking around the room during class to ask the
students questions about the holidays they are researching and to ensure all students are
participating in the group.
