An atom is the smallest particle of an element that retains its properties and is composed of even smaller subatomic particles, including protons, neutrons, and electrons. At the center of the atom is the nucleus, which contains protons and neutrons, while electrons orbit around the outside of the nucleus. Each element is defined by its atomic number, or the number of protons it contains.
