Who would be the target audience
for your media product and how did
you attract your target audience?
Lizzy
Socio-demographic Grouping
Grade Social Class Chief income earners occupation
A Upper Middle Higher management – Administrative or professional
B Middle Intermediate managerial – administrative or professional
C1 Lower Middle Supervisory or clerical & junior management - administrative or
professional
C2 Skilled Working Skilled manual workers
D Working Semi and unskilled manual workers
E Lowest levels
of sustenance
Casual or low grade workers. Pensioners who rely on welfare
state for income.
My target audience would be in the A, B and C1 demographic, as these people would
have the money to afford a more upper class and sophisticated magazine.
The indie genre also seems to have a higher socio demographic.
Richard Dyer’s Utopian Solutions
Theory
• Richard Dyer’s theory suggests that audiences will respond
to a message in a media text if it offers compensation in
things which they lack in their own lives. For example, if a
consumer feels lonely or isolated, they would watch a
television program which involves happy social people. This
is known as the ‘Utopian Solutions’ Theory.
• In my magazine I have tried to target the ‘boredom’ and
‘isolation’ inadequacies, due to my magazine being
relatively light hearted and will provide my audience with
entertainment. My magazine features the artist ‘Lou
Warme’ who is a star that is approachable and easy going.
This will create a connection with the consumer and the
star – making the audience feel less lonely.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
• Maslow’s theory states that we all
have the same 5 basic needs. The
most basic of needs are shown at the
bottom of the triangle, you need
these in order to survive, and the
higher on the triangle you go the
closer you are to self actualization.
• Maslow’s theory can be applied to
media texts, as people read
magazines in order to receive certain
gratifications from them. For
example, you can read an article
about a celebrity, this involves you
with a group of people who also
admire the celebrity.
• Due to the indie genre, my magazine
is presented in a creative way, I will
be trying to focus on creativity and
self actualization. I will also focus on
love and belonging.
Post Production
• I have found that audiences like a strong mast
head, a famous face on the cover of the magazine
and a catchy strapline
• Some also liked how magazines maintain a style
all the way through, by either using fonts or
colour schemes
• I applied this to Idolize by having a strong cover,
and masthead. I maintained all the fonts
throughout the magazine showing continuity.
