Who would be the target audience for your media product
and how did you attract/address your audience?
By Eloise Kemp
Socio Demographic Grouping
Grade Social Class Chief income earner’s
occupation
A Upper middle class Higher management, administrative
or professional
B Middle class Intermediate managerial,
administrative or professional
C1 Lower middle class Supervisory or clerical and junior
managerial, administrative or
professional
C2 Skilled working class Skilled manual workers
D Working class Semi and unskilled manual workers
E Those at lowest levels of
sustenance
Casual or lowest grade workers,
pensioners and other who depend on
the welfare state for their income.
Advertisers and marketing companies use a social grade categorizing
system to define their target audiences (based on their occupation)
My target audience would be of the A, B and C1 demographic, as they will have a high income
so will be able to afford to buy an upper class sophisticated indie magazine. Also the indie
genre audience tends to have an upper class socio demographic.
Graham Burton: Socially and Media Grouped Audiences
 Socially grouped means grouped by factors such as
age and gender. My target audience will be males
and females aged 15 to 25 years old.
 Media grouped means an audience can be
identified by their relationship with the media, or
their media tastes, for example, magazine readers
or rap music enthusiasts.
My audience would be indie music enthusiasts also
interested in fashion and have a strong individual
sense of style.
John Hartley
 John Hartley added to Burton’s theory by looking in
more detail at socially grouped audiences. He
added the following categories:
Self
My audience would be interested in attending festivals,
gigs and other forms of live music.
They would also be interested in style as well as celebrity
features. They would watch more unique and individual
programs such as Skins or other in depth dramas,
alongside the reality drama genre.
Gender Male & Female
Age Group A young adult age group ranging rom 15-25
Class Middle Class, as they will be style conscious and
therefore want to buy into a sophisticated stylish
product rather than to save money.
Ethnicity My audience will be the British population which
features a range of ethnicities but I will be mainly aiming
at the western culture and heritage.
Richard Dyer’s Utopian SolutionsTheory
 Richard Dyer states that people will respond to a media text if it offers them
compensation for the inadequacies in their own lives. Through the media audiences
can vicariously live their lives and fulfill their wants and needs, leading them to strive
to a utopian life.
 I will be targeting Isolation by creating a sense of community within my magazine by
creating a relationship with the reader. I will also be targeting loneliness through the
magazine’s presence on social networking sites such as twitter. Boredom shall be
targeted through exciting features with celebrities.
Inadequacy Solution
Isolation Community
Confusion Clarity
Boredom Excitement
Loneliness Social Networking
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
 Abraham Maslow stated that we all have the same 8 basic needs as humans.
 I’m specially basing my magazine around the idea of self-actualization, due to the fact the magazine as
there is creativity of the magazine.
 Also, Esteem can be applied as the stars
featured are confident and stand out from
the crowd.
 Love/belonging is also covered through
the relationship built between the readers
and the magazine through each issue bought
and how the can be involved in the mag by
submitting views through Twitter and other
social media sites.
Post-Production
 Following on from my post production work I found
that audiences enjoy a strong strap line, mast head
and famous face on the cover of a magazine.
 The also mentioned that they liked how certain
magazines maintain a house style by using the same
color scheme throughout the magazine.
 I applied this to The Word by having a strong cover
image, strapline and masthead. Also maintaining a
pastel theme with triangles throughout the issue.
