 A mixing console or mixing desk is an
electronic device for mixing audio
signals, used in sound recording and
reproduction and sound reinforcement
systems. Inputs to the console include
microphones, signals from electric or
electronic instruments, or recorded
sounds. Mixers may control analog or
digital signals

first ever console designed
specifically for the live
sound production industry:
the L500.
 System T was then
launched in 2016 to meet
the demand for Broadcast
production with an off-the-
shelf IP infrastructure
(Dante) and built on the
Tempest platform developed
for the Live consoles

2020
 Yamaha has launched new
additions to its range, the
RIVAGE PM5 and RIVAGE
PM3 digital mixing systems.
The launch of two new control
surfaces and two new DSP
engines gives greater choice
and flexibility to deliver
optimum sound in a much
wider range of applications.

Mixer and Console
 The term mixer and console are often
used interchangeably.
 However, a mixer is a small portable
device performing limiting function while
a console is a complex device performing
larger processing.

Audio console use
 An audio console combines, balances and roots
the signal.
 A simple console combines several of the
incoming signals into a single output signal.
 The audio console is the heart of the studio: it’s
used to control anything that the listeners hear on-
air.
 There is an input for every channel.
 The slider on the audio console amplifies the
incoming signal from a variety of sources; it mixes
them and routes them to a unique output.

Types of Audio Consoles
 Generally, an audio mixer will fall into
one of three categories:
 Fully-digital audio consoles
 True analog audio consoles
 Analog consoles with digital audio
interfacing

Digital console
 Setting can be pre programmed and
recalled when necessary.
 Mixing and processing feature that only
digital can provide like automatic
feedback suppression.
 Noise resistant digital tranmission.

Analog console
 Lower cost for a limited set of features.
 Easy operation for first time users.
 Provides conventional approach.

Advantages of Analog Mixing
Console:
 Warm, organic sound due to the use of
analog circuitry.
 Immediate tactile control over individual
channels and effects.
 Easy to use and intuitive with a traditional
workflow.
 Easily integrated with outboard gear, such as
compressors and EQs.

Disadvantages of Analog Mixing
Console:
 Expensive compared to digital mixing
consoles.
 Bulky and heavy, making it difficult to
transport.
 Limited effects and routing options
compared to digital consoles.
 Limited input and output capabilities.

Advantages of Digital Mixing
Console:
 Portable and lightweight, making it easy to transport.
 Highly portable
 More powerful DSP, allowing for more sophisticated
effects and routing options.
 Increased input and output capabilities.
 Cost-effective, making it more affordable than
analog consoles.

Disadvantages of Digital Mixing
Console:
 Digital sound can be colder and less
organic than analog.
 Can be difficult to use, requiring more
time to learn and understand.
 Lack of tactile control over individual
channels and effects.
