Health care industry professionals have predicted a higher number of hospital audits in 2015 than in previous years, including 340B audits. When Congress created the 340B Drug Pricing Program to increase access to medication among underserved populations, no organization existed to conduct audits. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) did not begin its 340B audits until fiscal year 2012.
- 3. During that first year, the audits aimed more at education and collaboration than punishment. Recently, however, auditors have begun instituting major penalties for violating the terms of the program. Over the years, the number of audits has also increased. In fiscal year 2013, HRSA audited 94 health care providers’ 340B programs, followed by 99 the next year. The director of HRSA’s Office of Pharmacy Affairs, however, said that health care providers should expect this number to double in fiscal year 2015 because of funding increases authorized by the 2014 Omnibus spending bill.
