- 4. WHY BIOMETRIC ATTENDANCE? Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based time and attendance systems have a big drawback: buddy punching. Buddy Punching? A person delayed on his way to work can hand over his tag or ID card to his colleague so that his presence is marked in the database even though he is absent. Biometric time systems eliminate buddy punching

ONE TIME ENROLMENT PROCESS β’ The staff as well as the student requires one time enrolment process. β’ For this one time a system is required. β’ The individual must first enter their unique id. β’ Press the desired finger on scanner 3 times as and when instructed. β’ Dispatch module after the process. β’ Insert 9V battery for its power supply. β’ Now ready for daily authentication process.

A green and a red β’ Set the red to HIGH in the code generated β’ Green active when finger placed β’ Rest of time Red will be active β’ The enrolment program is uploaded in the Arduino
- 14. 3. RASPBERRY PI β’ Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized single board computer. β’ Install a Raspberry Pi OS onto an SD card(minimum 4gb). The New Out Of the Box Software (NOOBS) is the recommended one. β’ Mount Arduino on Raspberry Pi. β’ Thus the program is inserted into the OS and makes it run automatically whenever power supplied. β’ Hence device becomes automatic.

ARDUINO WI-FI SHIELD β’ Arduino Wi-Fi shield connects the Arduino to internet wirelessly. β’ We need to program it to send the fingerprints taken to the server via the shield. β’ Initially the staff is required to enter the day, period (using keypad) and his/her fingerprint as well. β’ After checking with database, the module is passed to students to enter their fingerprint.

GSM/GPRS SHIELD β’ The Arduino GSM Shield allows an Arduino board to connect to the internet, make/receive voice calls and send/receive SMS messages. β’ The shield uses a radio modem M10 by Quectel. It is possible to communicate with the board using AT commands. β’ Insert a SIM to send SMS to the parents automatically. β’ We do programs and upload it to the Arduino board to send SMS automatically
- 22. 7. LCD DISPLAY β’ We use JHD204A display. β’ Whenever the finger is pressed his/her id will be displayed for confirmation. β’ The inputs given are also shown in the display.

WEB INTERFACE FOR STAFFS β’ Can also be managed manually. β’ Each staff is given a unique username and a password. β’ They can view the student details, can manually send Mail or SMS, and they can see the attendance percentage of each students. β’ They can also download the attendance details in excel sheet form and take printouts if needed. β’ Thus fully automated and is very easy to calculate the internal marks of students.
