This document discusses automatic time series forecasting and summarizes key points from a section on forecasting the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) in Australia. The PBS is the government drug subsidy program that costs nearly 1% of GDP annually. Forecasts of drug usage are needed to budget costs but in 2001 the budget was underforecast by $800 million using simple Excel forecasting on only 3 years of annual aggregated data, despite 10 years of available monthly data. More sophisticated automatic methods are needed to improve forecasts given the thousands of products, seasonal demand, and other complexities.
