This document summarizes a study examining the benefits and challenges of online learning for at-risk high school students. The study analyzed two online learning programs in North Carolina: the North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) and Performance Learning Centers (PLCs). A key finding was that at-risk students saw both the autonomy of online learning and the responsibility for self-directed learning as benefits and challenges. The authors argue that with proper support structures, at-risk students can overcome challenges and succeed in online learning environments.
