What is GATE?
ADITYA COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, MADANAPALLE
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India examination
administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE
Committee comprising of Faculty members from IISc, Bangalore and other seven IIT’s
on behalf of the National Coordinating Board, Department of Education, Ministry of
Human Resources Development.
The GATE score/rank is used for admissions to Post Graduate Programmes (ME,
M.Tech, MS, Direct Ph.D.) in institutes like IITs and IISc etc with financial assistance
offered by MHRD.
PSUs too use the GATE scores for recruiting candidates for various prestigious jobs
with attractive remuneration.
GATE exam primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of the candidate in
various undergraduate subjects in Engineering.
The GATE score reflects the relative performance level in a particular branch.
GATE score is valid for three years.
What is GATE? Pattern of Question Paper

All the papers of GATE will be conducted by an ONLINE computer Based Test (CBT).
The GATE paper consists of questions of both multiple choice type and numerical
answer type.
For numerical answer type questions, the candidates have to enter a number as the
answer using a virtual key board.
The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hour duration that contains 65
questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.

The syllabi for the exam in Engineering
streams include General aptitude
(Numerical & Verbal) for 15 marks,
Engineering Mathematics for 10 to 13
marks and the rest of 72 to 75 marks in
technical subjects studied at B.Tech level.

You can get a financial aid of RS 12400/- per month in the form of MHRD scholarship.
Based on the score achieved in GATE, admissions are offered in IITs, IISc, and NITs,
and abundant opportunities for campus placements with salary packages ranging
from Rs. 6 lakh to 30 lakh.

engineering in NITIE Mumbai, where admissions are based on GATE score and

If you don’t have first class in Engineering and if it is a hurdle to apply for some of the

You can try for MS admissions based on GATE score in some of the foreign
Universities like in Singapore and Malaysia.

Duration and Marks
The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3-hour
duration that contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of
100 marks. The question paper will consist of both multiple
choice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer type (NAT)
questions.

Pattern of Question Papers
In all the papers, there will be a total of 65 questions
carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carrying
a total of 15 marks will be on General Aptitude (GA).
In the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS,
EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE, the
Engineering Mathematics will carry around 15% of the
total marks, the General Aptitude section will carry
15% of the total marks and the remaining 70% of the
total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper.

Pattern of Question Papers
(i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carrying 1 or 2 marks
each in all papers and sections. These questions are
objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four
answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the
correct answer(s).
(ii) Numerical Answer Questions of 1 or 2 marks each in all
papers and sections. For these questions the answer is a
real number, to be entered by the candidate using the
virtual keypad. No choices will be shown for this type of
questions.

Marking Scheme
For 1-mark multiple-choice questions, 1/3 mark will
be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-mark
multiple-choice questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted
for a wrong answer. There is NO negative marking for
numerical answer type questions.

General Aptitude (GA) Questions
In all papers, GA questions carry a total of 15 marks. The GA
section includes 5 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 5
marks) and 5 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 10
marks).
These papers would contain 25 questions carrying 1-mark each
(sub-total 25 marks) and 30 questions carrying 2-marks each
(sub-total 60 marks). The question paper will consist of
questions of multiple choice and numerical answer type. For
numerical answer questions, choices will not be given.
Candidates have to enter the answer (which will be a real
number, signed or unsigned, e.g., 25.06, -25.06, 25, -25 etc.)
using a virtual keypad.

Negative Marking
For a wrong answer chosen for the multiple choice
questions (MCQs), there would be negative marking.
For 1-mark multiple choice questions, 1/3 mark will
be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-mark
multiple choice questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted
for a wrong answer. However, there is NO negative
marking for a wrong answer in numerical answer type
questions.
