Project 2
Extension of a R.C. bungalow
Submission Date: Week 12 (16th
November 2015)
Introduction
The project is an integrated component where it involves structural theory, force calculation and basic
structural proposal. This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of
building structure.
Objectives of Project
The objectives of this project are as follows:
• To introduce the basic process of building structures design process to the students.
• To enable the students to have a holistic experience including Concept and Structure Layout
Design, Building Structure Engineering Considerations, Structure Members Sizing and
Calculations, Final Report and Presentation.
Learning Outcomes
• Produce a complete documentation on structural system of a case study
• Explore and understand the concept of structural analysis
• Identification of structural components
• Recognize, Execute and implement basic procedures of building structure design
• Produce a structural proposal
1
Tasks - Methodology
The assignments is divided into two parts, first part should be done in a group while the second part is an
individual work.
Part 1 – 10% (Group components)
Working in a group of 8 members, each group is to obtain floor plan of a maximum 3 storeys bungalow,
preferably 2 storeys. Students are required to carry out structural framing and prepare structural drawings
for the bungalow. Structural plans should include foundation plan, ground floor plan, first floor plan and
roof plan.
Part 2 – 30% (Individual components)
Each students is required to perform structural analysis of the bungalow.
1. Identify and quantify the load acting on the structure.
2. Analyse the structure.
a. To analysis minimum 6 beams (each beam must subject to different types of load, i.e.
UDL from one or more than one slabs, beam with point load(s) or combination of
UDL and PL)
b. To analysis minimum 4 columns (from roof to foundation level)
Submission Requirement
Suggested Format of A4 Report/Documentation
- Cover page- Name and student ID number should be written clearly (TU Logo)
- Table of Content
- Introduction to case study – description, floor plans, sections, elevations, perspectives and 3D
sketchup model
- Structural analysis report
- Design brief which summarize the weight of material and live load assumed
- Structural plans which inclusive of foundation plan, ground floor plan, first floor plan and roof plan.
- Structural plan for every floor (Roof, second floor, first floor, ground floor and foundation) to
indicate the framing of the building
- Load distribution plans for beam design (indicate live load assumed for each room on floor
plans)
(live load for roof is taken as 0.5kN/m2
and 1.0kN/m2
as dead load)
- Loading distribution plans for column size estimation
- Individual structural analysis report (with NAME clearly stated at the first page of each section)
which consists of
o Analysis of minimum 6 beams which inclusive
 Load Diagram
 Bending moment diagram,
 Shear force diagrams
o Analysis of column
- References
Assessment Criteria
The assessment for this assignment will be based on:
2
- Understanding and concept of structural system (ability to identify the structural components based
on evidence)
- Application of knowledge, concept and skill
o Ability to identify critical structural members
o Ability to analyse structural members
Marking Criteria
Marks shall be distributed as follow :
Group Component (10%)
Understanding of load distribution path
Understanding of structural framing
Clarity of structural plans
Individual Component (30%)
Understanding of structural analysis which inclusive the following : - 20%
- Ability to Identify and quantify loads acting on beams and columns
- Understanding of structural analysis
- Ability to choose the appropriate member size
Clarity of report – 10%
