Prerequisite: None
Final Assignment : Structural Analysis of a RC Bungalow
Submission Date: Week 13 (19th Jun 2018, Tuesday)
Introduction
The project is an integrated component where it involves structural theory, force calculation and basic structural
proposal. This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of building structure.
Objectives of Project
The objectives of this project are as follows:
 To introduce the basic process of building structures design process to the students.
 To enable the students to have a holistic experience including Concept and Structure Layout Design,
Building Structure Engineering Considerations, Structure Members Sizing and Calculations, Final Report
and Presentation.
Learning Outcomes
 Produce a complete documentation on structural system of a case study
 Explore and understand the concept of structural analysis
 Identification of structural components
 Recognize, Execute and implement basic procedures of building structure design
 Produce a structural proposal
2
Tasks - Methodology
Working in a group of max 6 members, each group is to design a single storey bungalow which consists of the
following component. You are free to choose any layout from APPENDIX A. The roof of the bungalow must be FLAT
ROOF.
1. 1 master bedroom with attached bathroom
2. 2 guests rooms
3. 2 bathrooms
4. Kitchen
5. Living area
6. Dining area
7. 1 store room
Next, each group is required to design the structural frame of the building and perform structural analysis on all the
component of the buildings. Every member in the group should get involved in structural analysis.

Submission Requirement
An A4 Report which consist of the following,
- Cover page - Name and student ID of all group members
- Brief description of the bungalow
o Location, usage, and etc
- All relevant floor plans, i.e. ground floor and roof plan
- Design brief which summarize the materials used, weight of the material and live load assumed
o Assume the size of all beams to be 150mmx300mm and all slab thickness to be 150mm.
- All structural plans, which inclusive of
o Foundation plan, structural ground floor plan and structural roof plan.
o Structural plans are plan which only shows structural component of a building, typically consists of
beams, columns, and slab.
- Beam analysis report which consists of: (a separator to separate analysis done by different student)
o Load distribution plans for beam design
**indicate live load assumed for each room on floor plans
**live load for roof is taken as 0.5kN/m2
o Load Diagram
o Bending moment diagram
o Shear force diagrams
- Column analysis report which consists of: (a separator to separate analysis done by different student)
o Load distribution plans for column design
o Estimation of column load
o Suggested column size
Assessment Criteria
The assessment for this assignment will be based on:
- Understanding and concept of structural system and load distribution path
- Application of knowledge, concept and skill
o Ability to analyse structural members
Marking Criteria
Marking critera shall be as follow :
1. Understanding of load distribution path
2. Understanding of structural analysis which inclusive the following :
a. Ability to Identify and quantify loads acting on beams and columns
