- 3. CHILDHOOD Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, Saxe-Eisenach, on March 31 st , 1685 His father was a church organist, and taught him how to play violin and harpsichord. After his parents died when he was 10, he moved in with his brother (also an organist) and began to copy, study, and perform music. Quit
- 4. FAMILY LIFE In 1707 he married his second cousin, Maria Barbara, and had 7 children (4 survived) In 1721 after his first wife passed, he married Anna Magdalena and had 13 children (6 survived) Anna Magdalena was a gifted singer, and 17 years younger than Bach Quit

FAMILY LIFE CONTINUED Two children from his first marriage, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach became significant Baroque musicians Gottfried Heinrich, Johann Christoph Friedrich, and Johann Christian, his three sons from his second marriage, also became significant musicians in their time period Quit
- 6. CAREER Bach was a German composer and organist whose sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments brought together the Baroque period and brought it to maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the German style with his contrapuntal technique. He was known for his improvisation at the keyboard Bach’s final job was the cantor of St. Thomas’ Church in Leipzig Quit
- 7. RELIGION Bach had a devout, personal relationship with the Christian God in the Lutheran tradition The high demand for religious music of his times inevitably placed sacred music at the center of his work. He wrote mostly Lutheran chorale hymn tunes Quit

PERFORMANCES Present-day Bach performers usually present the pieces from one of two different standpoints The first is called so-called "authentic performance practice", utilizing historical techniques and authentic instruments Alternatively, the use of modern instruments and playing techniques are used, with a tendency towards larger ensembles. In Bach's time orchestras and choirs were usually smaller than ones today. Easy listening realizations of Bach's music and its use in advertising also contributed greatly to Bach's popularization in the second half of the twentieth century.
