- 1. What is a Cell?
- 6. a. The Cell Membrane- (plasma membrane) a thin layer of lipid and protein that maintains the cell as a distinct entity. It acts like a fence with gates and regulates what gets in and out of the cell. - Plant cells have an extra layer for support called the cell wall. It is made up of cellulose a complex kind of carbohydrate.
- 8. b. Cytoplasm- an internal region between the plasma membrane and the nucleus. It is in constant motion which allows the movement of the materials within the cell. It is here where most metabolic activities happen. c. Nucleus- the most prominent organelle in the cells; an interval region of DNA. It contains the cells genetic material and regulates all activities of the cells.
- 11. - It is surrounded by a double membrane called nuclear envelop. It has a tiny nucleus called nucleolus which is responsible for protein synthesis.
- 12. Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells Organisms whose cells have no definite nucleus are called prokaryotes. Organisms whose cells have nucleus surrounded by nuclear membrane are called eukaryotes. Prokaryote comes from the greek word which means “before” and “kernel” while eukaryote means “true”, and “karyon” reflects the presence of a true nucleus.
