❑ A computer is a man made electronic machine which stores, reads and
processes data to produce meaningful information as output. It is made of
English word ‘to compute’. A computer accepts data from and input device
and processes it into useful information which it displays on its output
devices.
❑ A computer is a collection of hardware and software components that helps
us to accomplish many different tasks. Computer cannot works on their
own. They do what we want them to do, only we give them the right
command. Its memory is better then human memory.
The common characteristics that makes computers of all sizes such a powerful
machine are speed, accuracy and reliability, storage, automation etc.
❖ Speed- computer can calculate at very high speed.
❖ Storage – computers have their main memory and auxiliary memory system. A
computer can store a large amount of data.
❖ Automation – computers can be programmed to perform a series of complex
tasks, involving multiple programs. Computer will perform things flawlessly.
❖ Versatility- the wide use of computers in so many areas such as commerce,
scientific applications, education in day to day life is ample evidence of its
versatility.
❖ Diligence- diligence means being constant and earnest in efforts and
application.
HARDWARE
❑ Hardware is the physical
aspect of computers. The
hardware are the parts of
computer itself including the
CPU, memory, keyboards,
monitor, drives etc.
❑ And other parts called
peripheral components or
drives which include
printers, modems, scanners
etc.
SOFTWARE
❑ The set or series of
instruction called software. It
is the combination of
instruction and data, that
forms the building blocks of
applications such as word
processor, computer game or
spreadsheet.
❑ Software is divided into two
categories. System software
and application software
SYSTEM SOFTWARE
❖ OPERATING SYSTEM
❖ TRANSLATOR
❖ DBMS
❖ UTILITY
❖ DATA COMMUNICATION
