3 Nonverbal Communication
NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION
● Avoid being stationary
● Have controlled gestures
● Avoid ‘awkward’ / unprofessional gestures – hands in pocket, folded
arms
● Occupy hands with notes or a pointer. Nervousness tends to show in
our hand gestures.
● Vary eye contact to different individuals
● Face audience
VERBAL COMMUNICATION
● Speak naturally, not too quickly or too slowly or clear, audible
● Vary tone and pitch of voice
● Talk to the audience, not just in front of them
● Question your audience throughout to facilitate group involvement
and garner attention
● No jargon / Uncommon words (unless defined)
AUDIENCE
● Be aware of audience’s nonverbal and verbal communications or people
are bored or confused, their body language will show it. It is okay to
sidetrack a bit to catch their attention again
● Engage audience | Questions, activities
● Handle questions to the best of your ability
● Anticipate questions and have answers ready
● Sometimes questions allow you to highlight a point you want to make
