This document describes a case study of designing a new batch control system for a pharmaceutical plant according to the ISA S88 standard. The authors created a methodology for decomposing functional requirements according to S88 models and structures. They applied this methodology to design a prototype control system for part of the Nystatin production process at a pharmaceutical company. The control system was implemented using InBatch and Wonderware software. The case study demonstrated applying the S88-based methodology to an existing industrial plant and showed the feasibility and benefits of the new control system design.
