This report analyzes the innovation competitiveness of 40 countries and regions based on 16 indicators in 6 categories: human capital, innovation capacity, entrepreneurship, IT infrastructure, economic policy, and economic performance. Singapore ranks first overall with a score of 73.4. The US ranks sixth with a score of 63.9, while the EU-15 region ranks 18th with a score of 52.5. Strikingly, all other nations/regions have made faster progress than the US toward the new knowledge economy over the past decade based on change scores. If current trends continue, the EU could surpass the US in innovation competitiveness by 2020.
