 An education professional and writer from Columbia,
MO, Willy Wood is passionate about the topics he
addresses as a writer. As the author of the book The
Rock and Roll Classroom
(www.rocknrollclassroom.com), Willy Wood is
particularly interested in the role of music in human
learning.
Studying music as a child cultivates more than an
appreciation for the arts. According to a study
published in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2014,
research has shown that children who took two years'
worth of music lessons also developed stronger
linguistic abilities.
 According to the research, the things that music
and language share in common, such as pitch,
timing, and timbre, lead students who study music
to a heightened understanding of language. The
brain's understanding of syllables becomes
sharper with more time spent learning and
comprehending music, distinguishing similar-
sounding syllables like "ta" and "da" more
effectively. Some of the young people in the study
also cited other benefits beyond those measured in
the study, such as stress management.
