BE-VERB PATTERNS
PROGRESSIVE TENSE
Progressive Tense- an unfinished action- be verb
followed by a present participle.
Be verb + verb (ing)
Eliminate this pattern by removing the be verb and
changing the present participle to its simple-verb form.
She is singing.
She sings.
EXPLETIVES
Expletives- empty words – it is, it was, there is,
there are, there were plus a relative pronoun
(who or that)
“expletive” + relative pronoun (who or that)
Eliminate this be-verb pattern by removing the expletive
and the relative pronoun.
It is Tom who ate the last piece of cake.
Tom ate the last piece of cake.
SUBJECT COMPLEMENT
Subject Complements- be verbs plus an
adjective, noun, or noun phrase that describes
or renames a subject
Be verb + word that describes or renames subject
Eliminate this be-verb pattern by removing the be verb
and changing the complement into its verb form.
Dent is the winner of the game.
Dent wins the game.
PASSIVE VOICE
Passive Voice- be verb plus a past participle
Be verb + past participle(verb + ed/en) + Actor of action
appears as object of sentence
Eliminate this be-verb pattern by making the actor of
the action the subject of the sentence, removing the be
verb, and making the past participle as the main verb.
The exam was taken by the students.
The students took the exam.
