Internet usage exponentially increased amid the
coronavirus pandemic, and the way of life changed
completely for everyone in the world.
Due to the lockdown and social distancing
measures, organizations and educational institutes
had to shut down, and people were bound at home.
So, they resorted to the internet and technical apps
for work, education, information, and
entertainment purposes.
This heavy reliance on the internet has led to a
whopping 47% increase in broadband data usage,
with more gigabit and terabyte subscribers.
As per OpenVault’s Broadband Insights Report for
the first three months of 2020, the average
broadband consumption has reached 402.5GB. This
value was at 273.5GB last year around the same in
2019.

“Data is the new oil” is perhaps one of the most popular catchphrases
highlighting the importance of data. The metaphor is, admittedly, a bit
inaccurate, but it paints a picture of our collective online footprint concerning
the global economy and our digital lifestyle.

Get ready for some scary facts…
•The amount of data in the world was estimated to be
44 zettabytes at the dawn of 2020. (zetta = 21 zeros)
•By 2025, the amount of data generated each day is
expected to reach 463 exabytes globally.
•Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Amazon store at least
1,200 petabytes of information.
•The world spends almost $1 million per minute on
commodities on the Internet.
•Electronic Arts process roughly 50 terabytes of data daily.
•By 2025, there would be 75 billion Internet-of-Things (IoT)
devices in the world (Right now, 1 in 4 people own a smart
speaker).
•By 2030, nine out of every ten people aged six and above
would be digitally active.
•…and > 90% of all the data that has EVER been created,
was created in the last two years
7
“There were 5 exabytes of information created between the
dawn of civilization through 2003, but that much information
is now created every 2 days.” – Eric Schmidt, Executive
Chairman of Google

EvolutionoftheBigDataMarket
11
• The global big data market is expected to rise at a
CAGR of 30.08% from 2020 to 2023, equating to
$77.6B. And by 2026, market size is projected to reach
$512B. To put it into perspective, in 2019, the global
analytics market was worth $49B, an amount worth
double what it was just four years earlier.
• Digital transformation in the form of AI, machine
learning, and the internet of things (IoT) is driving big
data analytics spending, with executive-level
initiatives resulting in in-depth assessments of current
business practices and demands for better, faster,
and more complete access to data and related
analytics and insights.
• A study by Accenture stated that 90% of its clients had
big data analytics in their strategic plan.

Two types of online service consumers:
A. Highly concerned with privacy
B. Willing to share data in exchange
for free services and/or convenience
Most people are a hybrid.

Different“data
perspectives”
14
Businesses: Increased need to leverage
personal and sensitive information for
competitive advantage
Criminals: New opportunities for identity/data
theft and fraud
Consumers: Increased awareness and concern
about collection, use, and disclosure of their
personal information
Legislators: A need to take measures that
restrict access and use of personal information
by businesses

Do users know what data they agree to
provide in exchange for free services?
Under what conditions do service providers
agree to provide free services?
The consent to share a user’s data with third-
parties may be sneakily included as one of the
checkboxes selected when registering on a
site, or presented in small print, for example,
when a user fills out a form with their
detailed data to get a loyalty card (alongside
a 10% discount towards future purchases in
the store).
Good News: We are starting to move from a
binary choice to a negotiation (more to come
later).

Apple's iTunes EULA is 56 pages long
PayPal's is 36,000 words
Most EULAs:
- remove liability
- force users to agree to be monitored
- give companies your data
- are ever changing
Companies don't even take them seriously
Many companies won’t let users look at their
EULA until they sign up, or companies make it
impossible to find on their site.

There are several thousand companies
around the world collecting information
about consumers from public and non-public
sources in order to sell them to other
companies. Depending on the range and type
of data they store, data brokers are divided
into four categories:
1. Data brokers for marketing and
advertising
2. Fraud detection data brokers
3. Risk-mitigation data brokers
4. People search sites
