The cell cycle has four main stages - G1, S, G2, and M. G1 is a growth phase where the cell grows and carries out normal functions. S phase is where DNA replication occurs and copies the cell's DNA. G2 is another growth phase to prepare for division. Mitosis (M phase) is where the cell nucleus and cytoplasm divide to form two daughter cells. The rate of cell division varies depending on the needs for that type of cell. Cell growth is coordinated with cell division so cells do not exceed a size limit for adequate material exchange.
