TOP-DOWN BOTTOM
UP APPROACH
By
Manojkumar S (18MBTA16)
II M.Sc industrial Biotechnology,
Department of Microbial Biotechnology,
Bharathiar university.
INTRODUCTION
• Nanotechnology is a part
of science and technology about the control
of matter on the atomic and molecular scale -
this means things that are about 100
nanometres across.
• NANO means dwarf
• Nanometre is a unit of length in the meteric
system equal to one billionth of a metre 10
power -9.
OBJECTIVES
Technology is the making ,usuage and
knowledge of tools, machines, and techniques in
order to solve a problem in a specific function.
CHARACTERIZATION
• Characterization is done by using a variety of
different techniques like
• SEM,TEM
• AFM
• XRD
• FTIR
• NMR
• Photolithography
SYNTHESIS
Synthesis of Nanomaterials
Two aprroaches :
• Bottom up
• Top-down
BOTTOM-UP APPROACH
• In the bottom up approach molecular
components arrange themselves into more
complex assemblies atom by atom ,molecule
by molecule cluster by cluster from the
bottom.
• Molecular components arrange themselves
into some useful confirmation using the
concept of molecular self assembly., Eg,
Synthesis of nanoparticles by nanodispersion.
TOP-DOWN APPROACH
• In this approach nanoscale devices are created by
using larger externally controlled devices to direct
their assembly.
• The top-down approach often uses the traditional
workshop or micro fabrication methods in which
externally controlled tools are used to cut ,mill
and shape materials into the desired shape and
order.
• Attrition and milling for making nanoparticles are
typical top-down processes.
STRUCTURE OF NANOPARTICLES
• Zero dimensional nanostructures - nano
particles
• One dimensional nanostructures –whiskers
,fibres , nanowires , nanocables and
nanotubes.
• Two dimensional nanostructures –thin films.
• Three dimensional nanostructures –colloids
bearing complex structures and shapes.
Bio nano (Top-down bottom up approach)
APPLICATION OF NANOTECHNOLOGY
Nanobiosystems, Medical and health
applications:
• Enhanced biological imaging for medical
diagnosis.
• Early diagnosis of atherosclerosis.
• Detection of early stage Alzhemier
disease(gold particles).
Contd…
• Agriculture application.
• Environmental remediation applications
New nanotechnology enabled sensors to detect
identify and filter out and neutralize harmful
chemical or biological agents in the air and soil
with much higher sensitivity than is possible
today.
