Students at Southern Oregon University created a stationary bike called the "Grid Cycle" that generates electricity from pedaling and feeds it into the local power grid. The students built the prototype bike for $3,000 over 10 months with help from an adjunct instructor. The bike records how much energy each rider generates and the total so far is enough to power a home for 40 minutes. The students and instructor hope to build more bikes to install on campus and at local gyms to encourage exercise that also produces clean energy.
