Birdbrains: Bird Quiz

Editor's Notes

  • #4: The Bar-headed Geese will soon be arriving in a couple of months to several lakes all around us, flying over the Himalayass. Look out for them and report them on eBird! This photo is by an eBirder, Vaidehi from Gadag in North Karnataka.
  • #5: They fly from Arctic coasts to Australia/NZ, often on non-stop flights.
  • #6: A species on which Gopi Sundar works on. This photo is taken from one of his eBird checklists.
  • #7: In photo is one of the species of many Pittas, the Mangrove Pitta by Garima from Odisha.
  • #8: Those of you who joined birding must have seen this yesterday right outside! You can still see them if you go out birding tomorrow morning flying around the palms outside venue.
  • #9: Deepest Underwater Dive Piscivorous birds are often amazing swimmers and divers, and the popularemperor penguin holds the record for the deepest dive, reaching 1,751 feet deep in the Ross Sea off Antarctica.
  • #11: Close-up of plumage, the classical habitat and the shot of a schoolboy doing “something” that schoolboys often do!
  • #13: Distribution map from Birdlife (These are often approximate), Photo of this person gives the first half of the name while the beautiful pheasant-tailed Jacana gives the other half.
  • #14: Hume, known in some circles for promoting Indian independence, is better known in our circles for his ornithology work! Very few photos of the bird from India
  • #15: Sketch of the bird from an eBird checklist of Raghupathy Kannan, distribution map (these are not super accurate!) and the photo of the person who described it.
  • #16: This photo of the bird by Jegan from the famous Iyerpadi area, the same area from where Sridhar’s Iyerpadi gentleman comes from. Layard named the species name of the bird, Muscicapa muttui after Muttu one of his helpers.
  • #17: Close-up of a part of the bird, distribution map from birdlife and another photo of a person closely associated with the bird.
  • #18: The fall of the sparrow, the autobio of Salim Ali, where the Yellow-throated sparrow was a turning point.
  • #19: A WW II minesweeper ship of the US Navy, sketch of the bird from an eBird list of R Kannan in 1984 and the photo of the person whose name commemorates the bird name.
  • #20: From an eBird checklist from Thailand.
  • #21: A kids TV character, a dog behaviour of interest, and the distribution map of the bird.
  • #22: The Motacilla flava beema gets its sub-sp name from Bheema.
