What does SQL mean?
Structured Query Language
• SQL - Structured Query Language – is a special-purpose programming
language designed for managing and searching data held in a relational
database.

What is database software?
• Database software is the phrase used to describe any software that is designed for creating
databases and managing the information stored in them.

• A database program is the heart of a business information system and provides file creation,
data entry, update, query and reporting functions. The traditional term for database
software is "database management system“

Data Redundancy
• Data stored in different locations is unlikely to be updated consistently
• Data redundancy – same data stored unnecessarily in different places
• Data inconsistency – different and conflicting versions of same data occur at different places
• Data anomalies – abnormalities when all changes in redundant data are not made correctly

Database Normalization
• Database normalization, or simply normalization, is the process of organizing the columns
(attributes) and tables (relations) of a relational database to reduce data redundancy and
improve data integrity.
• Normalization involves arranging attributes in tables based on dependencies between
attributes.
