• For more details, see Re:Invent 2013 presentations by NASA JPL cyber security engineer Matt Derenski
(http://awsps.com/videos/SEC205E-640px.mp4)
“Based on our experience, I believe that we can be even more secure in the
AWS cloud than in our own datacenters.”
-Tom Soderstrom, CTO, NASA JPL
Rob Alexander / CIO of Capital One Bank
• “And of course, security is critical for us. The financial
services industry attracts some of the worst cyber
criminals. So we worked closely with the AWS team to
develop a security model which, we believe, allows us to
operate more securely in the public cloud than we can
even in our own datacenters.”

Editor's Notes

  • #15: This graphic breaks down a typical APPLICATION STACK. All of these elements are required for any application that you would like to use. __ ___ _____ _____ The costs and complexities typically increase the higher you go. Earlier this year I met a Blackboard Client and they told me that they didn’t need to discuss Blackboard Cloud – as they already were moving to the Cloud. I was really interested in this and discussed this further. It turns out that they were looking to move some of their applications to the AMAZON (AWS) infrastructure as a Service CLOUD. This just fantastic and a GREAT first step in moving to the cloud. But unfortunately moving to an AWS will only help with the lowest 4 elements (Networking,Storage, Servers and Virtualisation). Which is typically about 20% of the total stack cost. Like I said this is great – but they will still need to support and manage all the other elements. So moving to an Infrastructure as a Serivice solution is great – but only with a true Software as a Service solution will you realise the full savings and efficiencies that Cloud can provide.
