Middlesex University  Learning Resources Essential Library Skills
At The End Of This Session  You Will Be Able To: Use the Learning Resources Web Pages / Library Subject Guides Use the Library Catalogue to find a book or journal Locate the books and journals on the shelves Request and renew books (using your Library Account) Log-in to electronic resources (e.g. online journals and books)
 
Learning Resources Homepage / Library Subject Guides Go to Task 1 in your handout
The  Library  Catalogue The Library Catalogue lists all the material (books, journals, videos etc.) held in all the Middlesex University libraries You may use any campus library, or via the library catalogue you may request books from another campus to be sent here for you to collect
Books This is an example of a reference for a book: Author Date Title of book Barnes, R. (1995).  Successful study for degrees . ( 2 nd  ed). London: Routledge. Edition  Publisher
Books How are they arranged?
Dewey Decimal Classification The main Middlesex University campus libraries (Hendon, Cat Hill and Trent Park) all use the Dewey classification scheme Each subject has its own subject number
Dewey Shelf order - sample subject areas: 300 Social sciences Shelf order within a subject 155.4 HEA
NLM Classification   At the hospital libraries, the National Library For Medicine (NLM) Classification System is used This is a specialist classification for health and medical resources and consists of letters and numbers  E.g. QT35 GAT W20.5 CLI
Book & Journal Locations
Finding Books  on the Library Catalogue After a short demonstration of searching for books using the Library Catalogue   ( http://www.lr.mdx.ac.uk/ ) Please go to Task 2 in your handout
Requesting Books If the book you are seeking is already on loan or only available at another campus, you may request it via the  library catalogue

Logging in to My Account
Renewing Books Online  Use the ‘ My Account’  option to see what items you have on loan and to renew them NB You will not be able to renew requested books

Journals This is an example of a journal reference : Author  Date  Title of article Ellis, N et al. (2007). ‘Exercise interventions as an adjunct therapy for psychosis: a critical review’.  British Journal of Clinical Psychology , 46, (1), p. 95-111.  Journal Title      Volume  Part  Page Nos.
Journal Access Information regarding the Library’s holdings of print and electronic journals can be accessed via  The  Library Catalogue   or  The Biomedical Sciences Library Subject Guide ( http://libguides.mdx.ac.uk/biomedicalsciences )
Print Or Online? A journal may be available in print form or available online (or both) To check availability, use the library catalogue If available in print form, the catalogue will tell you which campus holds the journal If available online, there will be a blue ‘web access’ link to the available online issues of the journal

Electronic Resources Password For many journals, you will be asked for an Electronic Resources username and password Your username will be your IT user ID  (e.g. AD123) Your password is your IT password
Journals How are they arranged?
Print Journals Are Arranged… Alphabetically by the exact title of the journal Within each title, the journal is arranged by: Volume number Part or issue number Date
