General Resources
Training Detailed  training  on how to use our Library Catalogue and Electronic Journals Enquiry  Book  @ Desks on Level 3. This is very important for new students not familiar with the electronic catalogue system !!!
Databases … A database is a collection of records: articles, proceedings of conferences, reports or books No need to browse the hard copies of journals because a database is a computerized library to retrieve individual records.

To access the library page for  Natural and Agricultural Sciences select Faculty Libraries
 
 
 
Basic search on database Biological Abstracts (BA) The search strategy principles applied here can also be used in any other database
 
After you have selected BA from any database web page this  ErlWebSPIRS  page will open WebSPIRS hosts some of our databases, including BA
You can search  all  the years (from 1969) by selecting this check box  or  you can select  specific  years for your search.
After you have selected the years, click on the button  Start Searching
If you get his message, try again later to open BA.  We have 5 access licenses to search BA and this screen means that all 5 are in use!
Select  Advanced  to start you search.  This option will give you better control over your search
Change the field by using the drop down menu (Terms anywhere).  Terms Anywhere  implies that  all  the fields in the database will be searched for your keywords.
Select the field  Organisms .  You can change to different fields and compare the results of you searches.
Type in the name of the organism you need information on  Combine the phrase “mycobacterium bovis” in the field  Organisms AND the term vaccin* in Terms anywhere.  The  *  (truncation or wildcard) implies that the database will be searched for vaccin e , or vaccin es  or vaccin ation , etc.
Click on Search
379 records are too many references to manage
Change the field for the keyword  vaccin * to Title (TI). The database will now restrict its search for  vaccin * to the  Title  field. Click on  Search  again. Refine the search
133 results are more manageable.  If you still want to retrieve less records,  go back and change the field for the  mycobacterium bovis  search to the  Title  field or you can return and restrict your search to specific years, e.g. 1995 - 2003
Select the display button to retrieve the 133 records
You can now browse all 133 records and mark the relevant records by selecting this check box next to each record. Or you can decide that you would like to keep all 133 records.
Select the option you prefer:  1)  Print  the records 2)  Save  it to a disc 3)  Emai l the records to your email address
You can select here the records you would like to print, email or save: all records , a selection of the records from the option  Record number  or  marked  records. Enter your email address if you have selected the email option. You can also change the subject to your preference, e.g. Biological Abstracts search
You will receive a confirmation note.
Please remember to  logout  once you have completed your search. If you don’t logout the database will stay open and restrict a next user from accessing it.
Visit the  How do I …?   drop down menu or the  Help  file for tips on how to use BA.
 
 
 
Looking for articles from database searches? Full text links from databases A-Z List of E-Journals Catalogue for hard copy If not in our library: request from any library in SA or any other library of the university off-campus, VET, MED If not in SA, request via email from overseas
 
 
Select the FIND option to search for journal titles Titles can be available on different supplier platforms. Select the one suitable for your article publication year
