The Queen Isabella Causeway bridge connecting Port Isabel, Texas and South Padre Island collapsed on September 15, 2001 when four barges veered off course and struck a support pillar, causing three 80-foot sections to fall into the water. The concrete bridge was intended for vehicle traffic over the Laguna Madre. The partial collapse resulted in 8 deaths and 13 survivors, after a barge impact during a boating accident damaged sections of the bridge.
