21 st  Century Education…
What is it… the ethos… A framework for developing betters learners. Embeds a ‘growth’ mindset within school. 17 learning habits/capacities organised into 4Rs
It will only work if you… Believe in every child in your class. Commit yourself to getting better as a leader of learning. Avoid negative self fulfilling prophecies. You stop saying ‘I’ve seen it all before!’
Why should we embed this into classroom practice? Better learners for life. Improved standards. Less emphasis on teaching – more on learning. Emotionally intelligent pupils. Children with a passion for learning for life. More involvement with parents.
Walk the walk… Most improved schools 2003-6; Huntington Primary -60 th  place  (approx 18,000 primary school in England) 2003 English writing results- L4+ 14% 2006 English writing  results – L4+ 76% Sustainability? 2007 - Combined score 243.

  • #5: This is not a woolly approach to teaching a learning, it needs structure, progression and a change of approach from children and teachers Embeds a growth mindset… the story of asking Gaynor to come to here last week… think of a really bright child in your class… if you don’t include every children in your class then you are modelling a mindset that says, this is it, it don’t get any better. What do you call the LA group in your maths group ,is it the lions, the yellows, the Saturns, will the tigers every be leopards, that the question… Simple organisation of these habits or capacities, compare this with the maths framework… 7 strands, five blocks, split into 15 yearly units, where by year 6, over 600 words should be mastered. Now some might say that the words are too complicated or silly, but they’re meant to last a lifetime, as apposed to the well done sticker that lasts roughly the same time a the adhesive on the back, or the ‘try harder’ or ‘work together’ message that means… er nothing
  • #6: The story about my first year 6 class. Class of 26, 9 on the SEN register for behaviour, they tore me to shreds' for a term. the deputy was concerned I wasn’t coping, my head had total belief in me – I was somewhere in between. BLP was only in its infancy, both as a national ideas and in our school. I’d love to say that every day I went to work believing that today would be the day when everything would click… no not everyday, but I did think this on most days – I never gave up on them, I persevered… Sophie and Joe. If I asked you how could you improve your teaching and the children’s learning and you cant answer then you would also benefit from increasing your learning power.
